Happy International Day of Peace!
Santa Anita co-op is a great example of putting the ideals we are commemorating and strengthening today into practice. After the longest civil war in Latin American history ended in 1996 with the signing of the Peace Accords between the Guatemalan government and guerrilla forces, this group of resistance fighters laid down their weapons and started a new life by purchasing an old coffee farm with a government loan. They tell their story in the documentary “Voice of a Mountain” recounting the conflict and the metamorphosis of the Santa Anita community. One co-op member says: “What we want now is to learn and know about coffee. It’s a whole new and different world, but we don’t just want to live under the coffee trees, but instead learn the language of coffee.” There is life after war. And it can be beautiful. *You can watch the movie online.
