Tonight's dinner: Seared, crusted ahi tuna (raw middles) with cucamelon slices, celeriac remoulade, and 3 roasted veggies from our garden (potatoes, parsnips and carrots) tossed with shallots, sesame oil, and fresh garden herbs. Remoulade and seared tuna are a food pairing made in heaven.

Celeriac remoulade... so. friggin. delicious.
One of the better things you can do with celeriac. Even folks who normally don't like celery flavour like this. You take a couple of "fists" of celeriac (we grew 2 dozen this year, and this is made from this year's harvest), add 1/2 cup of mayo (you make your own mayo, right?), 3 tbsp of dijon mustard, 1 tbsp grainy mustard, half a lemon, and salt and pepper to taste. Toss the dressing, shred the celeriac, mix, and put in the fridge. This actually ages well too, getting better on the 2nd and 3rd day, and so on.

Perfect little moneymaker tomatoes. Each the size of a baseball. Not the elite in taste (they taste really good, just not the best I'm growing), but man, they sure are pretty.

The last of our grape harvest. Not a lot, but it's our first full production year of growing the vines (the grape plants are 3 years old this year), so we're happy with the production, which was about 8 full bunches of grapes.

Awww. Our second... and last apple from our apple tree! It's a young tree, planted last year, and only produced two mature apples this season. We're hoping to dozens next year!

Here's what my basil patch looks like after a mid/late season harvest. I trim down one or two layers of leaves, leaving new tiny leaf and stems intact, which will grow full again. this way, you can harvest your basil three, four, or more times in a season.

What do I do with my basil harvests? Why, make pesto of course! I made almost 600g of pesto today (see second photo), and because we can't eat that much fresh, I freeze about 2/3rds of it in these cube trays. Works the charm, and gives us home made pesto all winter for our pasta dishes.

Just completed the third major harvest of our basil patch; the result is nearly a pound (428g!) of basil leaves! (after the stems removed). My yield this year is much better than last year (I was averaging about 200-225g harvests) and it's because I decided to plant more densely this year, and have two types of plantings: starters I began in March, and seed I direct planted in early June. Still at least one more major harvest to come!

Black Prince Tomatoes... Open pollinated heirloom-y (so you can save the seeds and get the same tomatoes next year). Our favourite regular sized tomatoes by far. Not much cracking on the vines, lots of flesh and very juicy, dense, sweet flavour. These were grown from my own saved seeds from last year's crop.

Our first ever grape crop! it's not much, there are about 5 or 6 groupings of grapes, but still were very excited.

Second Crop Potato Harvest - GREAT RESULTS!
So as an experiment, I planted early season potatoes as my second annual potato crop in early July (I think it was around July 5 or 6). I had already harvested about 12kg of potatoes from our spring planting. I didn't expect much. Well today, I harvested from 3 of the 8 grow bags and pots (that means I still have 5 to harvest!) I started in July, and the result is this! 2.35kg of great little potatoes from 3 growing bags! Not too shabby considering I started with only 9 small "seed" potatoes. So yes, in Victoria, we can have two harvests of potatoes - a longer spring/summer crop, and a shorter early season fall crop. Huzzah!

Remember the lettuce seeds saving routine I showed a month ago here in my IG feed? Well, here's the result of planting some of them only a week after harvesting the seeds. Check out these beautiful starters!

So what's going on? I'm separating tomato seeds for final individual drying, after fermenting their pulp for a week to break down the seeds' protective gel sacs. This ensures a super high germination rate from the saved seeds.

Second week in September and our basil patch still going strong. Already done 3 major harvests, and many more smaller picks.

Last year, I saw at the local fruit and veg store some "organic romas, local" for sale crazy cheap (something like $12 for 15lb). I bought a box, used some of it for preserved sauces, and took a gamble and saved seeds from some to plant this year. Had no idea if it was a hybrid, or a determinate, or open pollinated (I wanted open pollinated). Well, this year, it proved a good decision: right now, we have dozens and dozens of these beautiful, perfect roma tomatoes forming nicely in our tomato patch and I've already harvested about 20lbs worth, for use in pizza sauce and pasta sauces. I'll probably get 75lbs production this year, from a $12 initial purchase of 15lbs at the store last year.

So take a gamble on local organic tomatoes you buy at the store this year - save the seeds, and plant your own next year!

Can fruit and veg be "cute"?
I think, sometimes it can be ;) A couple of little fingers of sweet million cherry tomatoes.
