'Brogden' avocados are simply one of the finer things in life. With a smooth-as-silk flesh unlike other avocados, and a high oil content that gives them the rich flavor characteristic of Mexican and Guatemalan varieties, 'Brogden' is an avocado-lover's avocado. While the other avo varieties I've been profiling here are pure Mexican subspecies, 'Brogden' is a cross between Mexican and West Indies types. So the skin on this one is a little thicker than the skin on pure Mexican varieties, and the tree can take a hard freeze, but not quite as much cold as the pure Mexi-cados like 'Del Rio'. But Brogden fruits get larger than the pure Mexican types, up to at least 10 ounces (280g). This variety seems like an extremely promising market fruit both for existing avocado-growing territory, and also for areas slightly too cold to grow commercial avocados. More people should experience this wonderful fruit! Did I mention it makes an out-of-this world guacamole?

Trinidad Scorpion Pepper! πŸ‡ΉπŸ‡Ή πŸ¦‚The 2nd hottest chili on the planet! Wrinkled, lantern-shaped fruits ripen to a searing red-orange. Trinidad Scorpion averaged at 1.2 million Scovilles. I'm NOT eating this! Any testimonials from anyone eating this?? 🌢 πŸ‘©β€πŸŒΎπŸ‘¨β€πŸŒΎ

So many ground cherries! πŸ˜‹πŸ˜ This is what a bowl of happiness looks like!

Today's fortnightly veg box delivery 🍠 A rather wintery affair considering that it is definitely feeling very summery outsideβ˜€. Do you spy what I spy?...Brussels sprouts! πŸ”Ž Although one of them is large enough to almost pass as a cabbage! What am I going to do with all of this? Hmm. Well I've actually already snacked on a carrot and made kale chips with half the kale. (I tend to end up eating most of the carrots as "snacks".) I might bake the sweet potato and fill with spicy beans and avocado. (I've got sweetcorn in the freezer and coriander in the garden.) Roast the butternut squash and beetroot and serve with puy (French green) lentils and kale. Roast the potatoes and eat straight from the baking trayπŸ™Š. Cook up the beans, leeks, zucchini and broccoli - maybe as a stir fry - with quinoa or rice. Make swede and carrot mash. Roast the cauliflower (roast cauliflower is the bestπŸ‘Œ). Obviously not all at once...😝

I'm a bad girl. I've been neglecting my garden (again πŸ™„). Despite the lack of attention my 60 tomato plants have received, and they are miraculously covered in fruit, but I haven't harvested any tomatoes in weeks.

Not sure what's going on - I think I've just been pretty overwhelmed with all the exciting things going on around here & my mind has been elsewhere. So yesterday I decided enough was enough. I took a big basket and a 5-gallon bucket into the gardens with me and I went to work. -
-
I collected all these beautiful ripe tomatoes in the basket. Into the 5-gallon bucket I put all tomatoes that were overripe or had dropped, and the ones eaten up by bugs and squirrels.
-
-
I gave our turkey tom Percy dibs on the 'maters from the 5 gallon bucket, and most of the hornworms went to his girl Edna. Once my big boy's belly was full, I passed the rest of the tomatoes off to the pigs who are the masters of converting food waste into bacon! (PS our sweet Spider Pig has fully recovered - thanks for all your well wishes!).

Even though I neglected my responsibilities in the garden for the millionth time, I am still able to pick up where I left off and look on the bright side. Despite my neglect of the plants, they provided plenty of delicious ripe tomatoes for my family. The plants also produced lots of yummy snacks for my animals. And, now that all the ripe and overripe fruit has been picked, my plants will go into overdrive ripening all the green tomatoes! In the end, things work themselves out :) -

No. 61: Tiny, adorable Asian Eggplant varietals. (I asked the guy at the farmers market which type they were and he pretty much blew me off for asking. Okay. Anyone know?) #100daysofplantportraits #the100dayproject

Dude. You never know how spoiled you are until after the fact. For years when I had a small commercial farm I had a goat 🐐 herd and pigs 🐷 to do this. Now it's just me! πŸ˜‚. My strategy is 15 mins balls to the wall clean out and then 15 mins sit inside drink water. In this 85-90 degree weather we still have it is the only way I can get it done. I have 9: 3 ft x 8 ft beds, 1: 70 ft x 3 ft bed, 1: 50 ft x 5 ft bed and 4 3 ft x 3 ft herb beds. I used to have a solid acre in produce without those animals I'd have been screwed I tell ya. Autumn showed up in a hurry here in the valley. We have a frost warning already and there is fresh snow in our foothills. Ready or not here comes the cold! πŸŒ¬πŸŒ¨πŸ‚πŸI spent today harvesting as many herbs as possible from my plants, and after school we are going to glean the fields at one of our favorite local farms. Hey Fall, heyyyyy! .

First year for my figs!

I am SO excited about these little cherry tomatoes. I've been growing (fighting with) this container plant grown from seed for months. After issues with pollination, I finally got fruit, but they wouldn't ripen. I brought it in for the hurricane because I'd be damned if I let the storm kill it and the tomatoes ripened INSIDE. Smallest harvest I've ever had, but I've never been so proud πŸ˜‚πŸ’

Quick harvest of persimmons, guavas and jujubes before the plumbers come. I will go back out early evening to harvest more, especially the persimmons. I've decided to harvest the persimmons as early as possible, or I will lose them all to squirrels (and a few naughty tree-climbing chickens).

Heirloom Tomatoes, making ugly beautiful since the 1850s. This red hog "Rose" is one of many, weighs in at 1.2 lbs and would fetch $5 at the market.
