EASTER SUNDAY- PLEASE DO YOUR BIT TO ERASE THE STIGMA
I don’t often write specifically about child abuse but today I’ve chosen to and all I ask from each and everyone of you is to read on...
Child Abuse destroys lives. The suffering and damage cuts deep & the journey of healing is a long painful one. I know this first hand; Ive lost decades of my life to child abuse.
I recognise that many people will be celebrating Easter today, eating eggs and spending time with their families. This religious weekend, the deeper meaning involves suffering and it’s for this reason I have chosen to speak out. You see for as long as we all avoid the topic of child abuse, the undercurrent of suffering remains locked and silent.
We as a society are partly responsible for this silence. We judge people wrongly who are suffering, we only see problematic people; junkies; fat slobs; homeless; alcoholics and we turn our back. We don’t stop to empathise. Out of sight, out of mind. Somebody else’s problem.
Victims just like me feel societies rejection; we feel the embarrassment of knowing how we are being judged as a failure. So we hide our abuse and unhealthy coping mechanisms. The many charities know this problem hence it’s about encouraging people to “talk”. But how can we talk openly when we know that the misplaced shame we feel is exacerbated by societies opinion of us? We don’t want to be judged as a failure for not coping.
And so we go inwards...we use unhealthy coping mechanisms and continue to suffer. We either die, thrive or start to abuse others in similar ways we were.
So today I’m smashing open the lid of the silence. If you are reading this and you too have suffered; please know you are not alone. Keep going, keep digging deep and push through. Hold tight onto FAITH, have HOPE, eradicate the hate and replace your heart with LOVE and I can assure you PEACE of mind awaits... .
And to the rest of society whose lives are not affected please take it from me, we, us child abuse victims just want our voices to be heard...
Thank you for reading to the end.
