So last week I went to visit the daycare my new friend attends, and got to see where I’ll be treating. It’s uhhh... cozy? Mainly because it’s filled with fuzzy winter coats and boots. Because it’s a closet. Is this the smallest area I’ve treated in? Nope. How do we perform gross motor tasks in this situation? Keep reading. .
▪️I bring a yoga mat to all my travel locations. As long as the yoga mat can be laid flat, we can do body-weight and basic balance exercises. Sit-ups, push-ups, clam shells, bridges, planks, yoga poses. Maintaining quadruped while completing puzzles or other tasks. Holding single limb stance or tandem. We can hold tall kneel and half kneel. If we have a flat wall, we can do wall squats- or squats in the open if their form is good. .
▪️I love small wobble/rocker boards as well! We can stand, sit, kneel, hold quadruped. We can work on catching/tossing, squats, reaching outside our base of support, or just balancing (unilateral stance, eyes closed, etc). Magnetic puzzles are my fav with the wobble board (specifically the @melissaanddougtoys wooden fishing game, I’ll do a post on this).
▪️Take advantage of the hallway. As long as you’re not a distraction and you can move out of the way immediately in case of emergency, you can work on hopping, skipping, galloping, ball skills, or other larger tasks. Bonus points if there’s a tile pattern on the floor. Jump on all the blue tiles, skip the white, etc. .
▪️Take a trip to the playground. Again, as long as you’re not in the way- spending 15-20 minutes on the playground can be great. In some cases this may be the only access you have to stairs! Kids are generally very motivated by the equipment as well, and my favorite part- this is straight up practice of a functional childhood task. .
Traveling therapists 👇🏼 tell me about the strangest space you’ve treated in!! Mine would be a dark classroom bathroom during a school intruder drill 🤦🏻♀️😂.
