Top 12 Most Memorable Encounters of 2017: #4 - The Playing #Bear
2017 was a bad year for bear sightings, at least for us. We did have brief encounters with the two big boars, but what we lacked was quality encounters that allowed us a window into unique behaviour. With one exception. One early May morning we stumbled upon a female grizzly feeding on the early spring greens. What started out as a delightful photoshoot, quickly became one of our all-time great encounters as the bear elected to nap on the beach of a small lake. It was too far for images, but that was hardly a problem as the distance allowed the bear to go about her business without the interference of people. When the bear awoke, she waded into the water until her nose bumped into a stick. For the next half hour, you can't imagine the joy that stick provided the bear - or to us and the one other couple fortunate (and respectful) enough to quietly observe the #grizzly at play. I wish we could have captured the story to share with the world, to offer yet another reminder of the whimsical behaviour of bears when they're not lacking for food or stressed by the threats of people. But that brief window into this big bear's personality was the greatest gift we could have received.
