Passamaquoddy and Penobscot
So I've already posted a Passamaquoddy legend on here but now I'm going to go through their history a little bit. These two groups (Passamaquoddy and Penebscot) were actually not organized as tribes originally; living only in family camps. They relocated often, living a hunter/ gatherer lifestyle. When the British officials encountered these groups they perceived them as tribes based on their geographical locations. This distinction continued under the United States Federal gov't and they continue to live as such. 2 Passamaquoddy tribes live today in Maine and 1 in New Brunswick. The majority of the Penobscot nation lives in Maine.
These groups were some of the first to encounter Europeans upon arrival. They were generally peaceful but got caught up in a lot of wars due to their location. The picture shown is from 1921: a group of Passamaquoddy men demonstrating a ritual dance. (Thanks to St. Croix Historical Society)
