The oldest known living trees: Bristlecone Pines (Pinus longaeva). Characterized by female cones whose scales are tipped with claw like bristles (males lack this characteristic) and one-inch long needles that grow in bunches of five and completely surround the branches. In 1964, geographer Donald R. Currey aged numerous bristlecones in the Wheeler Peak moraine of Great Basin National Park by core samples and determined some individuals were over 4000 years old. He is also credited with killing Prometheus, a popular tree amongst local mountaineers, when he cut it down to count it's rings. It had 4,862, that's around 4,900 years old in people years. source: nps

It finally happened! Got to walk among, touch and sit for some moments among these ancient ones!! Such a beautiful day in this final weekend of the trail being open this year... meeting these ancient Bristlecones is something so breathtaking (of the soul, heart and the altitude!!). Trees in this grove having begun as long ago as 11,000 years ago 😲, and some still alive tipping the age of 5,000 years. They grow so incredibly slowly that one that appears to be a sapling baby may actually be as old as 300 years!! (up to 300 growth rings in an inch! - although most grow as “much” as one inch/diameter/100 years! So humbling to meet 💚). These truly remarkable beings thrive best in only less-than-welcoming environments, where most other plants cannot ever grow. It’s unreal to see their shallow roots (these trees often no deeper than a foot below the Earth’s surface...) clinging to rocky dolomitic soils for millennia with virtually no rainfall. Truly resilient, magical precious beings they are!!! ✨🌳✨😍

Trees of deep time are a portal to the past and future * To see the living bristlecone is to be struck by their beauty, but also by their strangeness and their extraordinary-intricately spirally limbs. It is hard to resist cliche when conveying the antiquity of these ancient beings , the bristlecone pine. @marybernsen and Tim✌🏽thank you very much for this quick but enjoyable trip #bristleconepine #whitemountain #whitemountains #greatbasinbristleconepine #subalpineforest #ancienttrees #treesgiveuslife #treesgiveusoxygen #amazingbeauty #amazingbeing #ivanhernandezphotography

There is a common misconception that Bristlecone trees at Patriarch Grove are the oldest. Either because they're more remote, or at a higher elevation. Truth is, these trees top out at "only" 1,600 years old - that's 3,000 years younger than those at Schulman Grove. #themoreyouknow 💫🌈

One of the things about Bristlecone Pines that makes them one of my favorite trees is the wide palate of colors in the wood, from nearly black to white, and rich tones of sepia in between. People hiking the trails with me must have found me odd to stop and photograph the bark up close, but I just found that so many trees caught my attention with their patterns and quirks. Posting several of them here for those very few macro treebark friends! #macrophotography #treebark #woodpatterns #hikingadventures #bristleconepine #ancientbristleconepineforest #oldesttree #oldesttreesintheworld #oldestlivingthings #inyonationalforest #inyo #roadtrip #hiking #naturephotography #treelover #pinetrees #pinuslongaeva #greatbasinbristleconepine #bishopca #highway395 #route395 #roadtripusa #i💚trees #texture #macro

Hiking the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest really makes you think about the scale of time. Next to 4,000 and 5,000 year old trees, you also find young trees with little cones about to start another generation. Amazing to think that (with any luck) this little cone will create a tree that will exist on this earth for thousands of years after I pass on. #whitemountains #naturephotography #bristleconepine #bristlecone #Pinuslongaeva #greatbasinbristleconepine #oldestlivingthings #oldesttreesintheworld #ancientbristleconepineforest #hikingadventures #explorenature #getoutside #route395 #californiahiking #natureart #pinetrees #treelover #pinecone #inyonationalforest #easternsierras #owensvalley #schulmangrove #methuselahtrail

This Great Basin Bristlecone Pine lounges over the Hoodoos in Bryce Canyon. This pine is a long-living species found in six states. Methuselah, a 4845 year old tree living in the White Mountains is thought to be the oldest non-clonal tree in the world. They get thier twisted and tortured look as they often die in portions. When the roots become exposed, they will dry out and die along with the tree directly connected above. The rest of the tree will live, with some in the most favorable conditions growing to 60ft (18.2m). ____________
