This quote by Gustavo Perez Firmat has had me spinning as I reflect through on history, migration and culture, as I think about how English is taught, why English is taught, and who English is taught by...
"The fact that I am writing to you in English already falsifies what I wanted to tell you. My subject: how to explain to you that I don't belong to English though I belong nowhere else." Photo views of an empty classroom in the #grandmosqueofparis #throwback #france #tbt

المسجد الكبير في باريس، تحفة معمارية
Built from 1922 to 1926 with elements inspired by the Alhambra and the Bou Inania Medersa in Fès, the Paris mosque is best place to escape crowds and go back in time. Beautiful setting and yummy mint tea in its garden

A year ago I was in Europe with my sister and visited the Grand Mosque of Paris so we could pretend we daytripped to Morocco 🙏😍✨🕌 If you are ever in Paris it's an amazing must see, and definitely be sure to grab some tea and snacks in their authentic and gorgeous cafe as well ☕️❤️ See more of our adventures with the #twoblondesineurope hashtag! I may also be daydreaming up future adventures with @ashleylaurel... 🙊👯🛩 #sistertime #grandmosqueofparis #grandmosque #paris #architecture #design #respect #coexist #colorful

Grand mosque of Paris,
The mosque was founded in 1926 as a token of gratitude, after World War I, to the Muslim tirailleurs from France's colonial empire, of whom some 100,000 died fighting against Germany. The mosque was built following the mudéjar style, and its minaret is 33 m high. It was inaugurated by President Gaston Doumergue on 15 July 1926. Ahmad al-Alawi (1869–1934) led the first communal prayer to inaugurate the newly built mosque in the presence of the French president. He was an Algerian Sufi, the founder of the modern Sufi order Darqawiyya Alawiyya.

During World War II (when France and Paris were occupied by Nazi Germany), the rector Si Kaddour Benghabrit managed the mosque to serve as a secret refuge for Algerian and European Jews. He ensured they were provided shelter, safe passage, and fake Muslim birth certificates to protect them from German persecution.
