•• Do you know how many families contact me and tell me they have tried EVERYTHING to get their little one to sleep. And NOTHING worked! They tell me the method they used and what they tried. I can immediately pin point what went wrong and how a simple tweak could fix it! Want to know the TOP FIVE mistakes made when sleep training alone? ••
.
.
1. Starting too soon - I talk about the need for setting up a healthy sleep foundation from the beginning, but I don’t mean sleep training. Infants should not do any type of formal sleep training until they at 16-weeks adjusted age. Why? It is then their circadian rhythms are in place and their sleep becomes more adult like. Trying any formal sleep training before then will only cause you and your baby stress!
.
.
2. Lack of consistency - this is THE most important aspect of sleep training! Parents have to be willing to be 1000% consistent in whatever method they choose! All it takes is 1 time out of 100 to not be consistent and your child will push to see how consistent you truly will be. As with all things in life, consistency breeds results.
.
.
3. Misunderstanding the method - I always coach parents to pick the method they feel like they can be the most consistent with (see above) but also, it is really important to have a clear understanding of what the method really is and how it works. Otherwise, you second guess yourself and you won’t see the results you are after, which will make you feel like the method doesn’t work.
.
.
4. Wrong schedule - any child can be taught sleep independently, but the crying will be worse no matter the method if your child is not on the right schedule. This means bed time is not at the right time, not the right number of naps and overall not meeting the daily sleep needs for your child.
.
.
5. Wrong time - any type of sleep training should start at bed time where the drive to sleep is much higher than it is at nap time. It often takes much longer for naps to come together than it does for night sleep. But both bed and nap time should be worked on at the same time.
.
.
Have you tried before to sleep train and it was unsuccessful? Was it because of one of these things?

As if watching the film over and over isn't enough...James decides that he can't possibly go to sleep without another story! And the story is...yep, you guessed it! #storytime #matilda #roalddahl #gotosleepchild

“What?!? It’s not like it’s late or anything...”

•• Once I got my son on a solid sleep schedule, it make my time with him outside of work SO much more enjoyable! I knew how many naps he would take, how long I had in between the naps and how to prevent him from becoming overtired! ••

So those of you that have been following us for a while, already know that #coolmanluke is a terrrrrrible napper! 🤦🏻‍♀️ To make up for his daytime shenanigans, he usually sleeps really well through the night and in fact, many times has been #likeateenager, sleeping till 9 or even 10am. 🙌🏼🙌🏼(#allthepraisehandsup) I’ve justified this as him colliding his nighttime and nap-time and we take what we can get, knowing that each and every day he will have his same #fomo attitude of never wanting to miss a thing. 🤣
Then there was last night... 🤨 and as I write this I pray that it was some kind of a VERY weird fluke that never reoccurs!!! I put Luke to bed just like I do every other night and just as I laid him down he started crying. I assumed that he would self soothe and fell asleep. Well- You know what they say about people who “assume”, right?! 🤪 Just as I was closing the door to his bedroom, he was opening it. 😩 He very stealthy hopped over the railing of the crib and was like— “Oh no, Momma.. Im going with you woman”! 😒 This mischief went on until 12:10AM 😳 (#strongwilledchild) when he FINALLY fell asleep. 💤🙌🏼 Of course like any other really intelligent mother 🤓 I then stayed up for another hour to get some work done (#chasingdreams)
Okay.. Now- Has anyone ever experienced one of those really creepy children 😑 who very quietly sneak in to your room while you are sleeping and stare at you 👀 until their staring wake you and as you open your eyes, they’re right there in your face?! 🙀 THATS how I got to wake up this morning ... 🥁 at 5:50AM!!!!!!! I literally could not believe my eyes!! All this to say that I am especially thankful for the natural energy found in my “little miracle in a bottle”, today! #pinkdrink for the win! I don’t normally suffer from having a lack of energy. 💃🏻🏃‍♀️ (don’t hate me) In fact, Justin affectionately refers to me as a “machine”. I tell him that God just gave me a little extra. 😉🙌🏼 So while I am normally thankful for my pink drink because it balances my hormones, keeps my blood sugar in check ✅ , keeps my periods regular 😍 and my sugar cravings 🍭 to a minimum, Today brought things to a whole new level! 🙌

But why would I sleep, Ma? Let’s just hang out! #gotosleepchild #3of3 #thiskidtho #sheneedstosleep #miriamshark #shescutethough

🙌🏼 No more cranky face toddler! After waking up multiple times a night for over 18 months, this Momma was exhausted when we first chatted - a cranky toddler up many times a night and two other kiddos is definitely a recipe for exhaustion! I loved working with this family and helping their little boy start sleeping better - through the night, a reasonable bedtime and consistent nap time! Now Momma gets to get a good night of sleep as well!

If this situation sounds like something you are going through, I can help you too! Don’t hesitate to reach out. Let’s chat and get you and your family on the path to a quality sleep!

How many of you lovelies feed your babe as a way to get them to sleep? 🙋🏻‍♀️This seemed to be the only way I could get my oldest daughter to sleep for her first 8 months of life! Was she actually hungry- NO! But what baby wouldn’t rather be snuggled up nursing/getting a bottle to fall asleep rather than being put in a boring crib?! Nursing my oldest daughter to sleep created an amazing bond between her and I, but it wrecked havoc on MY sleep! Some nights I was up every 1-2 hours nursing her back to sleep- this became a VERY trying time for me. ~
After hiring a sleep consultant, I soon learnt that my daughter was using me as a human pacifier- cute, right?! HA!! When we started sleep training, we incorporated the EASY method. What’s it stand for?
~
Eat- feed yo’ babe
Activity- read books/play with babe
Sleep- baby sleeps
You time- hello Netflix/pinterest
~
In a nut shell, the EASY method is a way to separate feeding from sleeping. The association can be VERY strong for some (like my oldest daughter) and it can a tough habit to change. The EASY method can be started very early in your child’s life- I actually encourage this as it’s much easier to build healthy habits than it is to change negative habits. ~
Do you feed your baby to help them fall asleep? ~

•• My inbox has been flooded over the past with with lots of mom’s of newborns. Want to know the one question they are all asking? When/how should I get my newborn on a schedule? ••
.
.
.
If you are a first time mom or even second time more, having a newborn can be such a jarring lifestyle change. You are set in your routine and free to spend your day however you please (before children) or have more schedule freedom with an older child (if this I not your first go round). Once baby comes it can seem like you are on a endless cycle of feeding, diaper changes and trying to get you and your baby some rest. So how and when do we make sense of a newborn schedule?
.
.
.
In the first several weeks of a newborns life, you are both adjusting to a new way of doing things. Give yourself GRACE! Don’t worry bout if the dishes are washed, the house Is picked up or if the laundry is done. Are you alive? Are the baby and other children alive? If the answer is yes to both of these, then you are doing AWESOME! .
.
.
Around 6 to 8 weeks we can start to establish some routines and schedules. Here are some keys to accomplishing that:
.
.
1. Always wake baby after they have been sleeping for three hours. Napping longer than that can impact their night sleep.
.
.
2. Begin to practice the EASY (eat, activity, sleep, you time) method to separate the feed to sleep association.
.
.
3. Keep those wake windows short, baby should be napping every 45 minutes to 60 minutes
.
.
4. Keep it consistent - we want to be practicing the same routine at bed time and nap time. Try to have your day start and end around the same time each day. And have a consistent sleeping place for your baby.
.
.
Have a newborn struggle? Post it below and let’s get you moving in the right direction.

😴 We are in week three of transitioning to 1 nap and we are LOVING it! We have more time in the mornings for fun outings. Plus, the 2-3 hour nap in the early afternoon is AH-mazing! 💜

The transition from two naps to one nap is often the hardest one for baby’s body to adjust to - and brace yourself, Mom and Dad, this transition can take 4 to 6 weeks before baby has fully adjusted to this new sleep pattern!😨 But once you get there, it is totally worth a few weeks of a tough transition - just imagine what you can do with a solid 2-3 hours in the afternoon!

I’ve discussed the importance of white noise when it comes to a healthy sleep environment but have yet to mention the importance of temperature. The ideal temperature for optimal sleep is between 19-21 degrees Celsius (66-70 degrees Fahrenheit). The reasons we want the bedroom to be cooler are:
~
1.)Overheating (especially in young babies) is a risk factor for SIDS. If you swaddle your baby, ensure they are dressed appropriately under the swaddle as we don’t want them too warm (oftentimes, a diaper is all they need). If your child is not swaddled, I highly recommend using a sleep sack. Woolino is my personal fav as it regulates Babe’s body temp. Use promo code SLEEPRANCH10 to get 10% off your purchase (link under shop on my site- link in bio)
~
2.) Our body’s internal temperature decreases when we sleep which cues the release of melatonin (the sleepy hormone). Ensuring the bedroom is cool will help your child have a restorative and restful sleep. Studies show that using a fan in you baby’s room will help lower the risk of SIDS by up to 72% (also works as another layer of white noise).
~
This temperature also applies to adult sleep too- keep it cool, folks! What temperature is child’s bedroom?

I think this season has been one of the hardest yet. I wrote about it last week if you are into that kind of thing (link in profile). Either way, check out this baby. He’s so cute I almost don’t mind how little he sleeps. #butseriouslyisaiah #gotosleepchild #isaiahcn
