"This is not the end. There is no end. It is simply the end of the old times, Loki, and the beginning of the new times. Rebirth always follows death. You have failed." - Heimdall, to Loki on his dying breath, Ragnorak: The final destiny of the Gods -
Neil Gaiman retells norse mythology as only he is able to. We start off with creation and introductions to the different gods. We start off in fun and games, with good cheer and yet always and constantly aware of a dark foreboding future. We haven't had the good fortune of discovering interesting books in a while, and Norse Mythology was found on an Eslite trip. We contemplated the book for a while as we were worried about overdosing on Neil Gaiman but worry was for naught really. We were throughly entertained by the gods' antics, angered but amused by Loki's pranks, pained by Ragnorak but at the end of it all, we saw hope and a future in Heimdall's eyes.
We've finished the book with mixed emotions. But these were the good kind of mixed emotions if you know what I mean.. The kind you get at the end of a good movie, interview or in this instance, a good book. If you chance upon this book in stores, pick it up and give it a go, it may be a slow burner for some but even the slowest burns are capable of leaving indelible marks.
