It wouldn't be a trip with me without having a bit of unplanned drama thrown in. It wasn't enough that I toasted a camera inside Hang Son Doong... Earlier in the day, I visited the Bantey Kdei temple where I visited a Buddhist monk who blessed me with good luck and a long life. A red and orange string bracelet would serve as a reminder of this blessing
Later that day shooting ruins, the heavens opened and it rained. In true SE Asia fashion, it rained an entire pet store, not just a few cats & dogs.
I was at one of the lesser ruins when it started and as the deluge began I ran to the closest shelter, which just happened to be a Cambodian family's modest single room home. The home consisted of a platform on stilts with a large, roughly 20x20 metal roof, with at least one enclosed living area on the side of the base and a good 120 sq ft open area. I stood on the edge of the platform while the parents and a teenage daughter sat in the middle of the open area waiting the storm to pass. This video was taken at the beginning of that burst.
After dumping huge quantities of rain for a solid 15 minutes the storm finally relented and I reached for my wallet to get a gratuity of thanks to the family. As soon as I pulled the bill out, my right foot broke completely through the apparently rotted floorboard dropping me down to my waist with leg dangling under the platform. My camera backpack flipped over my head and hung over the other side of the platform frame; it's dead weight securing me in place so I wasn't able to move and right myself. To say this was embarrassing would be an understatement.
The family leaped into action with the mother lifting my backpack back onto my back and then the father and daughter standing me back up so I could pull myself back up.
I thanked my stars for getting my tetanus shot renewed just before the trip as I got a minor scrape down my hamstring. Fortunately I fell perfectly straight through the frame and didn't catch any errant nails on the way through. I believe my morning blessing helped in that regard and for assuring I left without serious injury. I'm absolutely amazed I didn't break anything.
