We ran a garden care session at a primary school. One of the girls, maybe 11 years old said to me “I don’t have green fingers”. 🌿
I said “ No one has green fingers and the last time I checked mine, they were brown. No one is born with green fingers. We hear adults talk about how they don’t have green fingers and we repeat and think it’s a real thing. You get good at caring for plants by learning about plants and making mistakes.” They nodded knowingly. How we influence our young through our words. I’ve had kids as young as 5-6 yo telling me they don’t have green fingers. At every training session I tell teachers to stop saying that in front of kids. 🌿
And of course caring for a garden and helping it flourish is hard and challenging sometimes. Plus these young ladies are such busy bees. 🐝
So, we help them feel better about it by sharing our “What to do in the garden when you only have five minutes” handout. Easy peasy ....
1 Weed while you walk
2 Harvest while you walk
3 Pest control, check the bottom of the leaves and spray soap water
4 Hydrate with water
