Former president #GoodluckJonathan’s media team has said fear is the reason Nigerians did not protest en-masse against the fuel price increase made by the Buhari-led government.

The Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity #FemiAdesina, had in a tweet said Nigerians trust the Buhari-administration, replying Jonathan’s comments while receiving one of the PDP’s national chairmanship aspirants, #TundeAdeniran.

Adesina had tweeted:

When petrol went to N145 under PMB, Nigerians held their peace, unlike when they shut the country in 2012. The difference is trust. Simple.

In a statement released by Jonathan’s media team and signed by #RenoOmokri, the former president listed both the alleged killings of 347 unarmed Shiite men, women, children and infants, and the detainment of #IbrahimZakZaky, as instances through which the current administration instilled fear in the population.

Fear, the statement read, is “the reason Nigerians did not come out to protest against the fuel price hike”

Today marks the seventh anniversary of the death of the second president in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic, Umaru #MusaYarAdua in the Presidential Villa, Abuja. Until his passing away that morning, Nigeria went through one of the most tense political periods in its existence with controversy after controversy surrounding his illness, the refusal of his close associates to transmit power to his then Vice President #GoodluckJonathan, the “doctrine of necessity” that the National Assembly had to pass in order to make Jonathan the Acting President, his being snuck back into the country and so on and so forth.

The tension was so palpable that rather than the country grieve him upon his death, it heaved a sigh of relief. It was such a situation that many Nigerians swore “never again” that a cabal will hold the entire nation hostage on account of one man.

Today, we find ourselves in a similar situation with President Muhammadu Buhari, albeit much better managed. Besides the fact that both men hail from Katsina State, there are a lot of parallels between their situations.
First, like Yar’Adua, the exact illness that is afflicting President Buhari is a closely-guarded secret. Also, the Presidency and other top government officials is unable to get its script right regarding his illness – when one official says the President is hale and hearty, the very next one contradicts him by saying the President is ill and in need of rest. It must have been a shame when the President himself said he had never been so ill since he was a young man and even revealed that he had undergone blood transfusions.

This leaves the President with one option: resignation.

This was the very advice that he gave late President Yar’Adua in 2010 to “resign honourably if his health can no longer carry him or tell Nigerians the true position of his health so that they can evaluate.” While the passion President Buhari has for Nigeria is undeniable, the nation is much bigger than any one person that it should be held to ransom in such a manner. It is only proper that President Buhari let go of the reins of government so he can focus on nursing himself back to health.

Less than a week after the Minister for Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, urged President Muhammadu Buhari to stop blaming past administrations for Nigeria’s misfortunes, he has accused former President Goodluck Jonathan of wasting the $65 billion left by Olusegun Obasanjo in the excess crude account.

Amaechi says Jonathan wasted $65bn excess crude fund, PDP kicks

The Minister of Transportation, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, has said he left the Peoples Democratic Party in 2015 due to the gross mismanagement of the country’s resources by the former ruling party.

According to him, the wastage of the country’s resources was so much during the PDP reign that a total of $65bn left in the Excess Crude Account by ex-President Olusegun Obansajo was squandered by his successor, Goodluck Jonathan.

Amaechi said he left the PDP because he was desirous of change and he saw a change agent in the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Muhammadu Buhari.

Amaechi said this in Lagos on the sidelines of the Future Awards Africa held at the Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island.

According to Amaechi, Buhari, who eventually defeated Jonathan, inherited an empty treasury when he came into office as President.

The transportation minister lamented that had the Jonathan government saved rather than squandered the country’s resources, getting money to fund some major railway projects in the country would have been easy.

Amaechi said, “When Obasanjo was leaving, he left about $65bn in the Excess Crude Account, but this money was frittered away and we wonder where the money is. “As at then, the price of crude oil during the President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration hovered around $140, with this, they did not leave anything for the incoming government. “With that kind of money, we should be thinking of connecting Nigeria through rail system. The rail between Ibadan to Kano would have been completed. “Also the rail gauge between Port Harcourt to Maiduguri and Lagos to Calabar would have been completed, but all the excess crude money was frittered away, we need to ask questions.’’ Amaechi said as the then Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, he was influential and could have stayed and used his position to force the former ruling party to do the right thing, but he was simply fed up. “My attention and belief shifted to Buhari which was the viable alternative; I believe in the change mantra.

PDP: Jonathan leads reconciliation team, Wike, Secondus visit George

Former President Goodluck Jonathan, on Monday, in Abuja, began a subtle move to douse tension generated among members of the Peoples Democratic Party over the outcome of last Saturday’s national convention in Abuja.

The former President assembled a team of his loyalists, who it was gathered, would visit aggrieved aspirants with a view to appealling to them to forget about their grievances and work with the Uche Secondus-led members of the National Working Committee.

Though the party has a standing committee on reconciliation, headed by the Governor of Bayelsa State, Seriake Dickson, it was gathered that the former President decided to assemble his team as the Leader of the party.

Among those in Jonathan’s team are his former Minister of Special Duties, Tanimu Turaki (SAN); a former Minister of State for Finance, Amb. Bashir Yuguda; a former Minister of Finance, Nanadi Usman; and his (Jonathan’s) bosom friend, King Turner.

Jonathan, on Monday, led his team to the house of a former Minister of National Planning, Prof. Suleiman Abubakar, in Abuja.

Those in his entourage were Turaki and Turner.

The visit, which was described as unscheduled, was said to have taken Suleiman by surprise as he was said not to have been informed that the former President was visiting.

Suleiman had threatened to challenge the outcome of the convention in court, saying his name was technically omitted among those contesting the position of the National Publicity Secretary.

He had told The PUNCH on Sunday that he would go to court to challenge the outcome of the election into the position he wanted to occupy.

A source at the meeting said the former President asked him to sheathe his sword and let bygones be bygones.

The source added, “Jonathan appealed for restraint. He thanked the candidate for his doggedness and passion for the party and pleaded with him to accept the outcome of the election as the wish of God.

PDP : IBB loyalists, Jonathan, Adeniran tinker with ‘national list’ The tension over the National Convention of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) heightened yesterday with the founding fathers of the party, loyalists of former President Ibrahim Babangida and ex-President Goodluck Jonathan launching a counter plot against governors.

Apart from breaking the ranks of the governors, the founding fathers, who are being led by Babangida and Jonathan, are also said to be tinkering with a “National List” for delegates to avert a post-convention crisis.

The founders of the party, including members of the Board of Trustees, have remained adamant on the zoning of National Chairman to the Southwest.

It was also learnt that there is pressure on Dr. Jonathan to call the PDP governors, who are being coordinated by Nyesom Wike (Rivers) and Ayo Fayose, to order.

Although it was gathered that there was an informal meeting between Jonathan and Wike recently, the governors have insisted on leaving open the contest for National Chairman.

The struggle for the PDP chairmanship is a straight battle between former Acting National Chairman Uche Secondus and  former Minister of Education Prof. Tunde Adeniran.

As Babangida’s loyalists, Jonathan’s supporters, ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s as well as many founding fathers of the party have been adamant on ceding the chairmanship to the Southwest, with Adeniran as the rallying point.

Babangida and other bigwigs in PDP have launched a counter plot against the adamant governors, The nation learnt.

One of the offers being tinkered is the compilation of a “National List” for delegates to counter the “Unity List” proposed by the governors.

Another option, which Jonathan was mandated to sell to the governors, is the possibility of making Secondus Deputy National Chairman (South) to Adeniran as chairman.

Alternatively, the founding fathers may break the ranks of the governors and have their way on Adeniran at the National Convention.

A source said: “The founding fathers of PDP, including Babangida, Jonathan, Atiku and others, have been discussing how to reduce tension at the convention.

I can’t testify until Jonathan appears in court, says Metuh

A former National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, Mr. Olisa Metuh, insisted before the Federal High Court in Abuja, on Tuesday, his further testimony in his ongoing trial would be dependent on what former President Goodluck Jonathan would tell the court in respect of the case.

His lawyer, Mr. Emeka Etiaba (SAN), and the counsel representing his company –Destra Investments Limited – Mr. Tochukwu Onwugbufor (SAN), had earlier said this before the court on Monday.

But the trial judge, Justice Okon Abang, had, in a ruling on Monday, dismissed the submission as unknown to law.  The judge maintained his position on Tuesday and ordered Metuh to continue his defence on Wednesday (today), while the court bailiff would make another attempt to serve Jonathan on December 11. “Whether a party will call a witness or not cannot be predicated on the evidence of a witness yet to be called,” Justice Abang ruled again on Tuesday.  But Etiaba said he would appeal against the judge’s decisions.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission had alleged in some of the seven counts preferred against Metuh and his company, Destra Investments Limited, that the ex-PDP spokesperson fraudulently received the sum of N400m from the Office of the National Security Adviser without any justification.

The EFCC also alleged that Metuh spent the funds on the party and for personal affairs.

The accused person was also accused of transacting business with $2m cash said to be above the threshold of cash payments prescribed by the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act.

But Metuh had insisted that both the then NSA, Sambo Dasuki, who released the sum of N400m and Jonathan, who allegedly authorised the payment, were required to testify in the case.  While the summons served on Dasuki had been successfully executed, following which the ex-NSA had testified in the case, the court bailiff had yet to be able to serve Jonathan personally.

Metuh gets last chance to serve Jonathan with subpoena

Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court in Abuja said on Monday that he had the power to set aside the subpoena inviting former President Goodluck Jonathan to testify on behalf of a former National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, Olisa Metuh, if it continued to constitute delay in the trial of the ex-spokesperson for the PDP.

The judge, ruling on the submission by Metuh’s lawyer, Mr. Emeka Etiaba (SAN), said the claim that the defence would determine their next line of defence only after Jonathan testified in the case, was unknown to the law.

The judge said, “The submission of first defendant’s counsel, Emeka Etiaba (SAN), that the evidence of Dr. Goodluck Jonathan in court will determine whether the first defendant (Metuh) will be called to testify is unknown to law. I so hold. The submission, in my respectful view, was not made in good faith. I so hold. This submission is in contravention of the Practice Direction of this court. “Whether a party will call a witness or not, that cannot be predicated on the evidence of a witness yet to be called. “Criminal trial is not a game of hide-and-seek. Criminal trial is not a battle where the contending parties will apply tricks to undo one another. “It is not a game where a party will take the other by surprise. Therefore, I take it that the first defendant still has somebody to call as a witness other than Dr. Goodluck Jonathan to testify or testify in person. That is what I deduced from the submission. “Therefore, in the overall interest of justice, and I hope that the first defendant will take advantage of this, though the court cannot compel him to give evidence in the matter, give the bailiff time to make an attempt to serve the subpoenaed witness by personal service and this will be for the last time. Therefore, this matter is adjourned till December 5 and 6, 2017, as previously stated to enable the first defendant to call any other witness other than the subpoenaed witness or testify in person.

Release your findings on Chibok probe, Borno replies Jonathan

The Borno State Government has challenged former President Goodluck Jonathan to release the findings of his committee set up to investigate the abduction of Chibok schoolgirls in April 2014.

The state Commissioner for Education, Mr. Musa Kubo, in a statement, said, “Nigerians should ask Jonathan why he concealed reports of his own fact-finding committee.” Kubo, who was one of those interrogated by Jonathan’s Fact-Finding Committee on Chibok Schoolgirls Abduction, was reacting to a statement by a media aide to President Goodluck Jonathan, Ikechukwu Eze.

Eze, in an earlier statement, had asked Governor Kashim Shettima to tell Nigerians whatever he knew regarding the April 14, 2014 abduction of over 200 schoolgirls by Boko Haram after the sect attacked Government Secondary School, Chibok.

But Kubo said, “Rather than direct spurious allegations to Governor Shettima on controversies surrounding the abduction of Chibok schoolgirls, the media aide should ask his principal, President Goodluck Jonathan, why he deliberately concealed (the) report of a presidential fact-finding committee he constituted and inaugurated on Tuesday, May 6, 2014 and which submitted the report of its findings to him on Friday, June 20, 2014. “For the purpose of records, Eze and his colleagues are pointing towards the wrong direction; they should ask their principal, Jonathan, why he deliberately refused to make public the report of a committee he constituted, inaugurated and received their findings on facts surrounding the Chibok abduction and who is to blame for it. “For nearly two months, the committee undertook a thorough investigation that included forensic assessment of all documents on the entire issues, held meetings with parents of the schoolgirls, visited Chibok, met with the then Chief of Defence Staff, Chief of Army Staff, Chief of Naval Staff, the Director-General of the DSS and the Inspector-General of Police, all of whom were appointees of Jonathan.” #goodluckjonathan #chibokgirls #bornostategovernment #GlanceTeevee #MyNationAndi

JONATHAN TO GOV SHETTIMA: If I ran bad govt why is UN begging Buhari to maintain standard I set - #GoodluckJonathan

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has wondered why the United Nations would be pleading with the President Muhammadu Buhari administration to keep the standard he established if indeed he ran a bad government and made poor choices. Jonathan gave his thoughts in response to a statement credited to Borno State’s Governor Kashim Shettima during a book launch by Bolaji Abdullahi, the national publicity secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abuja on Thursday. Shettima had during his speech at the book launch claimed that Jonathan’s administration was marred by poor choices and bad governance adding that the former leader ran a “parochial and jaundiced” government. Senate President Bukola Saraki had also at the same event suggested that Jonathan was an unserious leader who never considered the scam of Nigeria losing about N1.3 trillion to subsidy as an issue. The Senate president had also described Jonathan as one who emerged leader either by “misfortune or fortune”. But responding in a statement released by his spokesperson, Ikechukwu Eze on Friday, the former President said that it was sad that some politicians could go to any length to make spurious statements in pursuit of sad narrative to remain politically…

Yar'Adua Wanted James Ibori As His Vice President - Bolaji Abdullahi

It has been revealed that late President Umaru Musa Ya’Adua wanted James Ibori as his running mate in the 2007 presidential election instead of Goodluck Jonathan.

Ibori was then completing his second term as governor of Delta state, according to a new book, ‘On a Platter of Gold: How Jonathan Won and Lost Nigeria’, written by Bolaji Abdullahi — who served as a minister under Jonathan from 2011-2014

The book will go on sale nationwide from November 30, 2017 after the launch.

Yar'Adua brought up Ibori's name before the idea was shut down by then EFCC Chairman Nuhu Ribadu and ex President Olusegun Obasanjo.

This is the first look of the front cover of the much talked about book, On a Platter of Gold – How Jonathan Won and Lost Nigeria, by the National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi. The book generated huge attention last week when it was revealed that it would be released in October, prompting some commentators to conclude it would be an exposure of the Goodluck Jonathan administration. Mallam Abdullahi served under the Jonathan administration for about three years and the expectation is that he would have inside details about the administration. According to the press statement announcing the book last week: On a Platter of Gold is part history, part political thriller, which answers many of the often-asked questions about Jonathan’s incredible rise to the highest political office in the land and his unprecedented electoral defeat in 2015.’’ The title of the book has also led many to suggest that it would not be complimentary to the former President who fortuitously rose to power in 2010 after the death of President Umaru Yar'Adua. In reality however, the title of the book may have been inspired by the former First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan herself. While clarifying her rift with former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, in 2013, Mrs Jonathan stated that the Jonathan presidency was an opportunity that fell to the South-South on a platter of gold. “The presidency is an opportunity that fell unto us on a platter of gold. We shouldn’t throw it away. We have had people that contested from this region but didn’t win. We didn’t fight, we didn’t pay. God willed it to us so we shouldn’t use politics to fight one another or destroy our kingdom”, Mrs. Jonathan had declared. #OnAPlatterOfGold #PlatterOfGoldNG #GoodluckJonathan #Politics #Nigeria #GEJ #Books #BolajiAbdullahi

PDP Governors Grumble As Jonathan Backs Atiku's Return

Some Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors are grumbling as former President Goodluck Jonathan endorsed the expected defection of ex-Vice-President Atiku Abubakar to the party and his bid for the presidential ticket

According to TheNation, some of the governors and party leaders prefer National Caretaker Committee Chairman Ahmed Makarfi, former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido and one-time Governor of Kano State Ibrahim Shekarau.

There were indications that some of the governors might oppose former President Goodluck Jonathan’s plan to back Atiku as the party’s presidential candidate.

Some of them claimed that they have not been consulted by Jonathan.

The newspaper also learnt that some of the PDP governors might have opted to work for Makarfi when he leaves office at the National Convention on December 9.

The governors have reportedly said they were “not keen to work for Atiku”. A former member of the National Working Committee (NWC) said: “Some of the governors have been working behind the scene with Jonathan on the Atiku project. We see him as a game changer and that is why we are desperate to woo him.

Presidential ticket: Atiku won’t disregard Jonathan’s advice on Obasanjo, says aide

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar says he has not ruled out the possibility of holding talks with his former boss, President Olusegun Obasanjo, in pursuit of his political ambition.

Atiku’s Media Adviser, Mazi Paul Ibe, stated this on behalf of his principal during a telephone interview with one of our correspondents in Abuja on Sunday.

Ibe explained that Atiku, a master of consensus building, would not discountenance the importance of carrying everyone along.

He spoke in reaction to the advice given by former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Jonathan had, in an interview, described ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo as “the boss of bosses.” He had advised the former vice-president to reconcile with Obasanjo in order realize his political ambition.

Ibe said, “His Excellency, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, is a savvy politician and he will not discountenance the importance of carrying everybody along in order to build a consensus.” Atiku meets PDP leaders

It was gathered on Sunday that Atiku had been meeting with leaders of the PDP.

The News Agency of Nigeria reported on Sunday that the former number two citizen had met with members Adamawa PDP executive at all levels, as well as state chairmen from the six states that made up the North-East.

He was also said to have met with the PDP national vice-chairman in the North-East.

The Adamawa State PDP Secretary, Abdullahi Prambe, said, “The meetings have been fruitful. “Our meetings with him (Atiku) have been fruitful and from his body language, he will soon return to the PDP.” “With Atiku, the party will carry more weight and more people will come back.” NAN reported that Ibe, Atiku’s spokesman, declined to comment.  Reps’ APC caucus disagree with Atiku’s reasons

The caucus of the All Progressives Congress in the House of Representatives on Sunday faulted the former vice-president’s reasons for resigning from the ruling party.

I take responsibility for PDP’s defeat in 2015 – Jonathan
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has taken responsibility for the Peoples Democratic Party’s defeat in the 2015 presidential election.

He, therefore, said his priority now “is how to ensure that the Peoples Democratic Party regains the Presidency in 2019.” Jonathan said this when Chief Olabode George and his campaign team paid him a courtesy visit in his country home in Otuoke, Bayelsa State on Tuesday.  A statement by Bode George Media Office after the meeting quoted the ex-President as saying it was his responsibility to ensure that the PDP rose again as a strong political platform to win the next elections.

Jonathan said, “Whether I like it or not, I must take responsibility for the defeat because I led the party to the election. The only thing that will make me sleep well is to ensure that the PDP comes back to power.” The former President said he was working with other stakeholders to ensure that the party was well organised to achieve this purpose though he preferred to work from the back seat.

He said the party must begin to take the right steps in the right direction to regain the confidence of the electorate, adding that the mistakes of the past would not be repeated.

Speaking earlier, George, a former deputy national chairman of PDP who is currently on a nationwide campaign for the chairmanship election in December 9, had congratulated the former President on his 60th birthday.

George urged the ex-President, as the leader of the party, to ensure that the PDP emerge stronger from the forthcoming national convention.

George, however, told the former President that the failure to apply the micro-zoning principle to the PDP chairmanship position had caused ripples capable of dividing the party.

He lamented that the party appeared to be drifting as there was no reasonable justification offered by the Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led National Caretaker Committee for jettisoning the principle, which was applied to all previous elections to the position.

George also paid a courtesy call on Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State.

Jonathan, Senate, APC pay tributes to Ekwueme Former President Goodluck Jonathan has commiserated with the Government and people of Anambra State, on the death of former Vice-PresidentAlex Ekwueme, who died on Sunday at the age of 85.  In a letter of condolence to the Ekwueme family and the Government and people of Anambra State, Jonathan described the late statesman’s exit as an irreparable loss.  A statement by the ex-President’s Special Adviser on Media, Mr. Ikechukwu Eze, said that Jonathan further described Ekwueme as an intellectual giant and a democrat who took a principled stand against military rule.

Jonathan said, “Ekwueme was a well-loved statesman who played politics of inclusion and made useful contributions in charting a course for Nigeria’s geopolitical stability. A totem of courage and patriotism, the Second Republic Vice-President’s role in deepening the roots of democratic rule was evident in his selfless and principled stand against military rule. “He was an intellectual giant whose prowess in learning was as deep and profound as the love he had for his people and nation. His commitment to educational excellence is a trait we should encourage Nigerians to imbibe. “As a professional, Ekwueme was an illustrious architect of international repute, whose works will continue to be celebrated at home and abroad. “He was a man of peace who will be remembered for his candor, open-mindedness and the bridges of understanding he built across cultural and political boundaries.” He was a stabilising voice –APC

Also, the All Progressives Congress said Ekwueme’s death had taken away a stabilising voice in Nigeria’s politics.

In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abudulahi, on Monday in Abuja, the party, however, said “the task before us is to keep Ekwueme`s legacies aglow. “The APC deeply mourns the death of respected elder statesman, political intelligentsia and Nigeria’s former Vice-President, Dr. Alex Ekwueme, at 85. “Truly, the nation has lost a fine gentleman and a true patriot who demonstrated that politics and integrity are not incompatible.” #alexekwueme #goodluckjonathan #apc #senate #GlanceTeevee
