13 years ago I was elected Princess XXVII Golden Eagle IV for the Greater Vancouver Native Cultural Society. I reigned for a year along side Chief XXVII Lone Wolf John Taylor. Together we honored the traditions of our Two-Spirited Elders and raised awareness and funds in support of First Nation resources in the LGBTQ Two Spirited community. This was a powerful experience for me. A couple years before I reigned, I attended my first "Passing of the Legacy". I had recently lost a brother to the disease of addiction and felt the need to reach out to our Culture. I was adopted as a small child and was not exposed to the First Nation Community. My experience that evening was welcoming and beautiful, I started to attend GVNCS events and was welcomed in like family. I felt that I was honoring the spirit of my brother by reaching out and educating myself about the pride of being a First Nation person.
It was a great gift to reign alongside the gentle spirit of John Taylor. During our year we built a friendship that fostered a life long mutual respect. It was filled with education, fellowship, and a lot of bannock!
This Sunday, July 23rd we will be celebrating the 40th "Passing of the Legacy.". This is the evening where we celebrate the step down of Legacy Princess XXXIX Shelley Volante and Legacy Chief XXXIX Twilight Niis Miou . It is also the evening where the Council of Elders led by our founding Elder Laurie Macdonald, pass the Legacy of representation to a new Chief and Princess. I look forward to celebrating another year of Two-Spirited Pride. Return to Innocence.
