Day 4: Best Practices Mission to the Kawarthas & Prince Edward County, organized by the Gros Morne Institute for Sustainable Tourism. As a bonus event, 2 of our East Coast group, Charles and Laura Lipnicki of PEI’s Island Honey Wine Co. gave us a tasting of their very fine, award winning meads.

Day 4: Best Practices Mission to the Kawarthas & Prince Edward County, organized by the Gros Morne Institute for Sustainable Tourism. Our last group supper at East & Main - an excellent night with several surprises. Even though they had lost our reservation, they managed to accommodate our “walk in” party of 17 (we did have email confirmation of our reservation, so we really weren’t walk-ins). We had a lovely 3 course prix-fixe as part of the areas Countylicious event (like a local food focused Dine Around). We managed to bump into our old friend Dan from the night before at Angeline’s and sing him happy birthday again, a few sea shantys were enthusiastically sung, and our fearless leader Rob even brought out his tin whistle. They may not have been sorry to see us go.... 🤘🏽🎻🍻🎼

Day 4: Best Practices Mission to the Kawarthas & Prince Edward County, organized by the Gros Morne Institute for Sustainable Tourism. Next up, a visit to Kinsip Distillery. The distillery site was originally a barley and hop farm with its spectacular Second Empire style “farm house” built during the PEC Barley Boom of the late 1800s. They’re producing great gin & vodka from whole wheat, rye whiskeys, rum, cassis, shochu & a whole lot of interesting bitters. Swipe for more.

Day 4: Best Practices Mission to the Kawarthas & Prince Edward County, organized by the Gros Morne Institute for Sustainable Tourism. Incredible lunch at The Mill in Consecon - run by entrepreneur couple Sylvia Cambray and Chef Sebastian Schwab. Swipe for food and more...

Day 5: Best Practices Mission to the Kawarthas & Prince Edward County, organized by the Gros Morne Institute for Sustainable Tourism. Jenna Empey gave us a great tasting tour of the Gut Hut, their fermentation empire. We tried Kombuchas, sauerkrauts, kvass, tepache, kimchi. YUM! Clever combination of ancient wisdom and waste products leads to creation of the gut shot.

Day 4: Best Practices Mission to the Kawarthas & Prince Edward County, organized by the Gros Morne Institute for Sustainable Tourism. Next - tour of the groovy rooms and log cabin ( that Trudeau stayed in recently) at Angeline’s Inn. It’s run by s brother/sister team who inherited the business suddenly at 17 & 20 when their father was tragically killed in a car accident. Then they served us s lovely multi-course meal courtesy of The Hubb (a husband & wife culinary team). Featuring quail, lamb, mushroom & lobster bisque cavateppi, pumpkin pie dilly bar. Swipe for more...

Day 3: Best Practices Mission to the Kawarthas & Prince Edward County, organized by the Gros Morne Institute for Sustainable Tourism. Cocktails at the Drake Devonshire.

Day 4: Best Practices Mission to the Kawarthas & Prince Edward County, organized by the Gros Morne Institute for Sustainable Tourism. Next stop Parsons’ Brewery, and a visit with Chris & Samantha Parson’s, for beautiful relocated timber framing, great craft beers, and an excellent Mexican lunch. Swipe for more.

Day 4: Best Practices Mission to the Kawarthas & Prince Edward County, organized by the Gros Morne Institute for Sustainable Tourism. So I completely missed Day 3 due to a stomach bug - stayed in bed at lovely Huff Estates Hotel and watched early 90s movies, ate toast - but Day 4 was pretty great. We started with a visit to one of the only practicing cooperates (for use in wine & beers) in the country. It’s run by an incredible character named Pete Bradford. He also makes incredible barrel-aged vinegars - and we got to sample several, including a 35 year old vinegar called Solaras this completely blew our minds. Pete also makes wooden fermenters, taiko drums, and bought a Napoleonic era chandelier for $1 at an auction. Swipe for muchos photos.

Release the goats!

Excellent dinner at Agrarian with fine East Coast company. Our group for this mission include restaurant owners & managers, chefs, experiential tourism designers, and a farmers market manager. There’s an awful lot to be learned just from chatting with this bunch as we go!
