I have a special place in my heart for the #ocean and #sharks. As a #GlobalAmbassdor for @oneoceanglobal, I share a lot about plastic pollution in the ocean, but the truth is, it’s polluting all waterways including our beloved Great Lakes. All these photos are from #TheGreatLakes, mostly Lake Michigan (warning the second to last two contain slightly graphic images of fish). The Great Lakes contain 21% of the world’s freshwater, supplying water to 35 million people. They also support a $4 billion dollar fishing industry. Not to mention the ecosystem is home to 250 fish and so many other plants and animals. For those of us living in #Milwaukee and surrounding areas, the lake is a hub of activity and literally sustains life here. Plastic pollution is already a enormous problem in the lake and creates so many dangers. And, don’t forget, all water is connected. Lake, stream, ocean, river, rain - your action has a global impact.
So, this #EarthDay, April 22, I’m headed back out to do a beach cleanup at my local beach. Who wants to join me? Last year it was a mess after all the snow melted. Cutting down on plastic is best, but knowing we live in a plastic-dominated society, we gotta do our best to keep it out of our water. 🐟💦🌎
Bonus: @capeclasp is generously offering free bracelets for those who cleanup and take their challenge (go check their saved story).
