Film 3 - The World According to Garp (1982). 3 movies in and I've hit Robin's first serious film role. Garp is not a happy movie. It plays out tragedy after tragedy, covering themes about death, rape, infidelity and violence.
Robin plays T.S Garp, a writer and the 'bastard child' of a nurse played by Glenn Close. She wanted a child, but not a husband, and so rapes a dying soldier in her care. That should tell you the mood of this film. It's not for kiddies. At all. As a film, Garp is quite good. We see Garp grow from a child to an adult, with all the trials and tribulations that come with that growth. And the performances make it all feel very real. Robin manages to portray Garp's raw emotions particularly well. You can feel the anger and the pain when tragedy strikes, and the elation when things finally start to look up for the character.
Would I recommend Garp to everyone? Hell no. But if you're a film buff, it's absolutely worth considering.
