It is said that in these respects, it is modelled after the Colosseum in Rome. Whilst the Colosseum holds the title for being the largest Roman amphitheatre, the Amphitheatre of El Djem is not too far behind. The larger axis of the Amphitheatre of El Djem measures at 148 m, whilst its smaller axis measures at 122 m. In addition, the rows of seats rose to a height of 36 m. It has been estimated that the amphitheatre would have been capable of holding up to 35,000 spectators at any one time...

The Colosseum could hold between 50,000 to 80,000 spectators. It was used for #gladiatorial contests and public spectacles

The Colosseum, also known as the #FlavianAmphitheatre, is an oval #amphitheatre in the centre of the city of #Rome, #Italy. Built of concrete and sand,it is the largest amphitheatre ever built. The #Colosseum is situated just east of the #Roman Forum. Construction began under the emperor #Vespasian in AD 72,and was completed in AD 80 under his successor and heir #Titus. Further modifications were made during the reign of #Domitian (81–96).
#TheColosseum could hold, it is estimated, between 50,000 and 80,000 spectators, having an average audience of some 65,000; it was used for #gladiatorial contests and public spectacles such as mock sea battles, animal hunts, executions, re-enactments of famous battles, and dramas based on Classical mythology. The building ceased to be used for entertainment in the early #medieval era. It was later reused for such purposes as housing, workshops, quarters for a religious order, a fortress, a quarry, and a #Christian shrine.
The arena itself was 83 meters by 48 meters (272 ft by 157 ft / 280 by 163 Roman feet). It comprised a wooden floor covered by sand, covering an elaborate underground structure called the #hypogeum (literally meaning "underground"). The hypogeum was not part of the original construction but was ordered to be built by Emperor Domitian. Little now remains of the original arena floor, but the hypogeum is still clearly visible. It consisted of a two-level subterranean network of tunnels and cages beneath the arena where #gladiator and animals were held before contests began. The hypogeum was connected by underground tunnels to a number of points outside the Colosseum.
Although partially ruined because of damage caused by #earthquakes and stone-robbers, the Colosseum is still an #iconic symbol of #ImperialRome. It is one of Rome's most popular tourist attractions and also has links to the Roman #CatholicChurch, as each #GoodFriday the Pope leads a torchlit "#WayoftheCross" procession that starts in the area around the Colosseum.# more pics of inside Colosseum [linkinbio] @justcavalli_official #justcavalli

Rome's most famous monument was built centuries ago, looking at the #Colosseum reminds me of how beautiful some might look from the outside, yet cruel, and some are always carrying pain and agony in thier heart yet they are strong enough to rise and stand up tall.. In this place, first it started to worship Roman Gods and over centuries it was used for #entairtainment focusing on #gladiatorial fights facing deadly wild animals evidence related to wild #bears #tigers #lions .. results were either #victorious or #gladiators would be carried away dead,
These were my observations when standing and looking around the #colosseum

GLADIATOR for Day 9 of Marker March.
Drawn on a 4"x6" index card.

The Roman Forum is a rectangular #forum surrounded by the ruins of several important #ancient government #buildings at the center of the #city of #Rome. Citizens of the ancient city referred to this space, originally a #marketplace, as the Forum Magnum, or simply the Forum.

It was for centuries the center of #Roman public life: the site of triumphal processions and elections; the venue for public speeches, criminal trials, and #gladiatorial matches; and the nucleus of commercial affairs. Here #statues and #monuments commemorated the city's great men. The teeming heart of #ancientrome, it has been called the most celebrated meeting place in the world, and in all #history.

It gets 4.5 million visitors every year!!! This is from a visit sometime in 2006-07.
