An outspoken client of mine learned that he’s that way because as a boy he needed to be heard. We unpacked how the people around him get overshadowed and don’t get to fully express themselves and in the end, his strategy widened the gap between him and the people he cared about. I invited him to flip it upside down and be the one to give others the experience of being heard and allowing others to take up more space in conversation. Relationship quality, enjoyment, rapport, warmth, depth and connection went through the roof very rapidly! Perhaps it’s the thing you crave most that you most need to give. Food for thought.
