#MCM on a MASSIVE scale 🖤 I’ll admit it: def crushing on this amazing #RudolfStingel, "Untitled (After Sam)" from 2006, one of four monumental self-portraits by the artist based on black-and-white photographs (and all included in the fantastic Stingel retrospective organized by the @WhitneyMuseum and @MCAChicago in 2007!) Executed on an absolutely epic scale, the monumental painting is, surprisingly, intensely intimate: speaking about the work in 2006, around the time of his 50th birthday, “All work is autobiographical, so, that’s why I decided to just paint myself, instead of trying to come up with all kinds of wonderful ways to show myself...there’s a big tradition of portraits, and lots of self-portraits too; each artist did it. This is very different than everything that I have done before. I’m nearly fifty now…I just want to go back to a more psychological platform, if you want; reconnecting because of my age and everything to my origins, somehow. It also seemed to me to be the bravest thing I could do.” 📸 This stunner recently sold for $10.5 M at @Christies…a little out of my price range, but hey, a girl can dream.
