Happy 150th birthday to the first female scientist I ever learned about, Marie Curie!👩🏼‍🔬
-

Marie Curie is best known for her discovery of the elements Radium and Polonium☢️, so today on her birthday I wanted to share some fun facts about a wonderful scientist that I know is a role model to so many female scientists.
-
🔬 Curie was the first female to win the Nobel Prize, and the first person to ever win it twice!
-
⚗️Curie won her first prize in Physics and second in Chemistry
-
🔬 During WWI, Curie used her radioactive research materials to do "x-rays" on wounded soldiers to find bullets and other shrapnel
-
⚗️Curie and her sister started the research facility “Maria Sklodowska Curie Oncology Center”
-
🔬 Curie’s first name is actually Maria, and she changed it to Marie while living in France -
Finally, I leave you with my favorite quote from her and also the quote my mom texted me while I was typing this up:
-
“Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less”

Time to seize the week starting today!

One of my favorite quotes reads, "Little girls with dreams, become women with vision."

This however, means nothing if society tells you and shows you that you're only WORTH half that of a man.
-
This issue infuriates and frustrates me.
-
I'm not worth half a man. I'm not half as smart as a man. I don't work half as hard as a man.
-
So you better believe that I stand for Latina Equal Pay Day today, and every other day. The question is do you?
-
Do you know what 5 factors make up the Equal Pay Act under the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission?
-
1️⃣ Skill: Experience, ability, education and training.
-
2️⃣ Effort: The amount of physical or mental exertion needed to perform the job
-
3️⃣ Responsibility: The degree of accountability required in performing the job.
-
4️⃣ Working Conditions: Physical surroundings & Hazards
-
5️⃣ Establishment: Different locations (of a business) may be classified as the same work site. So find out how yours works and how it affects you.
-
So ladies, educate yourselves, keep working hard and don't settle for anything less than what you're worth. Once you know your worth, ADD tax ✨👑💕

A big shout out to Trader Joe's for having these cute little pumpkins. I wasn't able to make it out to a patch this year so I had the settle for store bought.
-
Did you know that carving jack-o'-lanterns originated in Ireland hundreds of years ago?
-
However, they didn't carve pumpkins back then. They used to carve turnips or potatoes. Actual pumpkin carving started when Irish immigrants arrived in America.
-
Now let's talk about some cool chemistry pumpkin facts.
-
Pumpkins are orange due to carotenoid compounds. These compounds also contribute to the orange color of carrots.
-
Six carbon alcohols and aldehydes make up the aroma of pumpkins. The main aroma contributor is cis-3-hexen-1-ol.
-
Now that you're thinking about the smell of pumpkin, you're probably wondering why the canned pumpkin doesn't smell the same as when you're carving. Well, this is because canned pumpkin doesn't really emit any of the six-carbon odor compounds. Instead you get burnt-smelling 2-methylbutanal, coffee furanone and furfular. The last two are actually rings!
-
Finally, the long awaited pumpkin spice (flavor). There's actually not much pumkin in it, it's really more about the spices that are added which are: cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove. Personally i'm not a huge fan of pumpkin spice lattes but I know that a lot of you are. Have you wondered why they're so popular, or why you grow addicted to them every year? Well check out a post that @soph.talks.science did to find out why!
