On the hottest weekend of the year in the UK. It’s imperative that we understand the benefits that drinking water has on us, both mentally & physically

Losing as little as 2% of your body's water content can significantly impair physical performance. It is vital to stay hydrated during excessive exercise, to replenish water lost through sweat. Sip water little & often!

Dehydration can severely impact your muscles. Without water, they can’t contract properly & you won’t be able to perform effectively, while your muscles will struggle to repair themselves after a workout
▪️
During exercise your body loses sodium & potassium as well as water. This can lead to issues like confusion & muscle cramps & an inability to regulate your body temperature, all of which can affect your athletic performance & make you sick
▫️
Mild dehydration (fluid loss of 1-3%) can impair your energy levels & affect your mood. It can lead to major reductions in memory & brain performance.

Drinking water can help relieve headache symptoms, especially in people who are dehydrated. Remember with the sunshine comes the temptation for alcoholic beverages. Alcohol is a diuretic, causing you to loose more fluid

Drinking water alongside alcohol can help to prevent dehydration. Have a glass of water before you start drinking alcohol & alternate alcoholic beverages with water throughout the evening. Drinking a glass of water before you go to bed will also help to relieve dehydration

Hangovers are partly caused by dehydration, drinking water can help reduce some of the main symptoms
▫️
Drinking plenty of water can help aid digestion, improve your bowel movement & prevent & relieve constipation
▪️
Your skin contains plenty of water which functions as a protective barrier to prevent excess fluid loss. Dehydration makes your skin look more dry and wrinkled, which can be improved with proper hydration

Drinking water before a meal will fill you up a little & provided you eat at a moderate pace & allow your brain time to catch up with your stomach you will feel full up sooner! Often dehydration is mistaken for hunger. Next time you get a food craving. Down a glass of water!

As the bank holiday weekend arrives, the age old dilemma arises. Will alcohol ruin my diet?

Is alcohol good for you? Some studies have proven that small quantities of alcohol can be beneficial such as Red Wine. But as with anything, in excessive amounts, NO❌
▪️
Can I still achieve superior weight loss results? NO ❌ Alcohol is burned before anything else by the body, slowing down fat loss
▫️
Should I avoid it entirely whilst losing weight? Definitely NOT❌
▪️
The key as with anything is, everything in moderation. Going on a full weekend bender, will put a halt & in severe cases take you 2 steps backwards
▫️
Having a better understanding about the calorie intake of the alcoholic beverages you choose to drink, will benefit you substantially
▪️
As I mentioned before with fancy coffee, the problem with liquid calories is that they aren’t very filling. So you don’t necessarily realise the amount of calories you are consuming on a night out
▫️
I love a good cocktail more than anybody, but approach with caution. Its effectively a sugar-laden concoction. One cocktail alone could have as much as 400+ calories!! So whilst a cocktail night sounds like a fantastic idea. Perhaps limit yourself to 1 or 2 before moving onto lighter options

Stick to your spirits, but remember the calories from mixers are the worst kinds of calories, simple & refined sugars. ▫️
Substitute for diet drinks, soda water, slim line tonics. Standard tonic water is still laced with sugar. Around 22g per can to be precise
▪️
If you know you’re going on a night out, you may want to consider reducing your calorie intake earlier on in that day.
▫️
Having smaller, lighter meals to counter the calories being consumed that evening.
▪️
Remember WATER IS KEY! You want to make sure to compensate for fluid loss because water helps dilute the alcohol concentration in your blood.
▫️
The biggest factor is the drink-fuelled munchies that shortly follows. It’s all very well sticking to spirits & low calorie mixers if you’re going to consume a 14inch Meat Feast Pizza or Large Mixed Kebab at the end.

Pre-plan your post-drink meal so that you don’t get caught out.
