This evening in Oxfordshire we raise a glass and wish a very Happy Thanksgiving to all Americans celebrating today.
To celebrate we have chosen an exceptional gin in the form of San Francisco based five times Distillers, Distillery No. 209 SXD. Why 209? It is because it is the 209th distillery registered in the USA.
Distillery No. 209 was originally established in 1882 by Founder William Scheffler, he purchased the patent for rights to a new design of a pot still and then went on to buy Edge Hill Estate in St Helen, from there he added a stone and brick distillery and went on to fulfil his passion and dream, distillation of spirits. What he produced was of high quality and the distillery and Scheffler gained much recognition for this.
Fast forward to 1999, Leslie Rudd became the steward of the property. He noticed the words 'Registered Distillery No. 209' painted above the iron doors. There began the inspiration and restoration of this property and the beginning of No. 209 gin. The property wasn't able to fulfil their grand plans for Distillery No. 209, hence a move to Pier 50 was made. The distillery is now located on renovated Pier 50, this optimum position is perfect as the natural cooling properties of the San Francisco Bay waters beneath the pier keep the air temperatures perfect all year round for distilling. It is also the only distillery in the world that is built over water!
The botanical profile is a closely guarded secret by the Master Distiller, it is thought there is anywhere between 8 and 11 carefully selected ingredients.
The sourcing of the botanicals spans 4 continents although where possible they do try to source locally.
Distillery No.209 is a beautiful mix of big juniper tones, deep herbal flavours and fabulous citrus twists, an intoxicating mix.
This evening we have chosen to garnish with rosemary & Pomegranate. The sweet gems of pomegranate perfectly pair with rosemary making this a taste sensation. Divine.
To all of our American followers we wish you a fabulous day and hope that it is filled with family, food and of course lots of Gin! Cheers ❤️
