PHI TA KHON - THE GHOST FESTIVAL
ผีตาโขน These are ghost costumes on display at Loie airport in Northeast Thailand. They are worn during the colourful Phi Ta Khon festival (Ghost festival). Ghosts and spirits play a large part in traditional Thai culture and beliefs. The original beliefs of the ancient Thai people, before Buddhism even came along, was Animism. Animism and animist beliefs is the belief in spirits. Spirits can inhabit trees and land and that's why every building in Thailand has a spirit house where offerings are made to appease these spirits. In the Northeast of Thailand, spirit worship is taken to new levels with the Phi Ta Khon festival (Ghost festival). You can learn more about the Ghost Festival here:
