In Ghachar Ghochar Vivek Shanbhag has written a devastating feminist novel from the point of view of an unnamed male narrator.
This is a timely book, written with great depth and restraint, and skilfully translated from the Kannada by Srinath Perur, an acclaimed English-language novelist in his own right. It sits alongside other similarly short, recently translated Indian works that voice the brutality of gender divisions in a changing social context

It’s time for #bookspreadsunday 🎉
~
I am back home from an amazing vacation at my aunt’s place where I spent a lot of quality time with my siblings. We bonded, had conversations that knew no time boundations, and laughed till we were bent double, holding our stomachs. I was on a complete reading break even though I had taken my books with me. 🙈 #booksterdilemmas is real, you guys. I wanted to read but I also wanted to make the most of this rare vacation.
~
I’ll resume reading now that I am home. I am also going to catch up on my favourite feeds and their content. Expect a lot of spam. 😁
~
❓: How was your weekend? Did you get time to read?

Ghachar Ghochar, by Vivek Shanbhag
Genre: Fiction, Contemporary, Indian
🐜
A simple, authentic and enthralling read... as unique as its title and of course the cover.
🐜
This one is just about 100 pages but there was so much to take away from it... a motley cast and their unique life struggle, story of ascent and dissent of an Indian family, opaqueness in relationships and a new expression in my vocab ‘Ghachar Ghochar’.
🐜
For an Indian there is a greater joy in reading this book since it is highly relatable, both with its characters & their idiosyncrasies or even various life situations. But that’s not it. I’d urge non-Indians to read this one too and get marvelled by its simplicity.
🐜
There’s a lot said explicitly and a lot implied. Read it for both. Ah and read it for its title and cover.

Ghachar Ghochar by Vivek Shanbhag

This slim novella is translated by Srinath Perur from the south Indian language of Kannada. The book delivers a story that is relevant to the times we live in. A simple story that touches upon the aspects of family life combined with modern living, this book provides details that hit home. Expect to be transitioned from one feeling to another as the book's unnamed narrator takes us through the life of his middle class family that finds recent success and how they deal, many times cold-heartedly with the changes and the aspects that may harm their position.
This book is a must read for #antonchekhov fans as the author beautifully captures the intricacies of life.
I give it 9 on 10 for it's sheer brilliance.

Ghachar Ghochar is a Kannada novella written by Vivek Shanbhag. The book’s narrator remains anonymous as he charts the story of his dysfunctional family comprising of Appa, Chikkappa, Amma, Malati, the narrator himself and his spirited wife, Anita.
~
The narrator starts in the present and gradually takes us back in time as he pieces together the story of his family’s impoverished circumstances and later, their sudden rise to affluence, owing to the flourishing of the spice business started by Chikkappa, an astute businessman, the brother of the narrator’s father, and also the family’s sole breadwinner.
~
The overnight transformation in the family’s financial status exposes fissures in the interpersonal relationships of its members as their new and bigger house remains just that — a house, the feeling of home lost somewhere in the vastness of its geography, its spacious rooms and long corridors.
~
However, the real rift in the family appears after the narrator marries Anita, an audacious woman who does not take well to the family’s submission to Chikappa’s suspicious ways with his business and women and often questions their silence.
~
The book is a reflection on middle-class values and their preoccupation with materialism. It is also a commentary on the flimsy foundation on which family ties rest in today’s time. It is only a matter of dissent before the bricks of this crumbling building start hurtling down in a relentless outpouring. The looming question really is then, do you build a stronger footing or resort to suppressing dissent?
~
The novella is fast-paced, engaging and it will keep you on your toes.

Easily the best book I have read in recent times. In fact I finished reading it sometime last year and got back to it again. This is a deceptively simple but disconcerting modern tale of how acquisition of money makes relationships in a household and with the self convoluted, eventually changing the dynamics of people's engagement with one another. Vivek Shanbhag draws you in from the opening scene...
.
.
.
A note on the English translation: Srinath Perur makes the novel his own. The family scenes, laced with local sarcasm and invectives, retain the palpable tension brimming underneath in English as well...making you uncomfortable as a reader. .
.
.
I liked the cover so much that I bought both the hardback and paperback editions. Rightly hailed as a modern classic, this book is a must must read. 💓

This is one of the most amazing, leaving me hungry for more book that I have read.
I saw Ghachar Ghochar making rounds on the bookstagram and was extremely intrigued by the title. .
.
.
The story is about a man unsatisfied with his life, wife and everything in between. Member of good for nothing family who live on the money provided by the younger brother. The family hates wife, who wants the lazy ass to work and ultimately they kill her, I think. .
.
.
.
The ending is a cliffhanger with no sequel to come. The book made me go crazy because I couldn't stop thinking about what happened to the wife. 🤷 Looking forward to more from Vivek Shanbhag.

Ghachar Ghochar by Vivek Shanbhag
The writing quality picks up strongly halfway through and it genuinely examines the intricacies of family life and how being born into a family and married into will always be different, even if you find your own kind of people. It ends on a vague, confusing and somehow creepy note. I'd say give this book some time, the starting half is pretty lacklustre. Not a do not miss book in any sense like every person is saying but is a good ,gentle book which says beautifully what it sets out to say. (The cover is even more amazing in context of the story)(yes i read this cause of the cover, like every other person) #ghacharghochar #vivekshanbhag #indianfiction #literature #bookdragon #book #bookstagram #novels #words #wordshavepower

🇺🇸I’m so excited to join the #bookwormtalenovember challenge that @tale.at.a.time is hosting!
This is my (ambitious) TBR pile for this month. It is not impossible to achieve though, since I’m more than halfway through #needfulthings and #loveinthetimeofcholera. This month im re reading #harrypotterandthehalfbloodprince because I’m feeling in need of a comfort read. #animalfarm and #ghacharghochar are two short novels that I’ve been meaning to pick up for a long time (thanks to Ariel Bisset review on both) hopefully this month I’ll be able to finally cross them off my TBR. #persepolis is a graphic novel that I’ve been really looking forward to and I can’t wait to read #wonderstuck as well, so I think both of them are going to be easy reads. Last but not least, #spinnigsilver is the one I’m more excited about, #rumpelstiltskin is one of my favorite fairy tales and I’ve heard so many great things about this retelling, I can’t wait to begin! #happynovember everyone!!!

Book #42 of 2018 is Ghachar Ghochar. This is a light read with a dark tone to it. This was first written in Kannada, a regional language in India and has been translated to English couple of years ago. The book has subtle shades of a man struggling with his masculinity and told in a very normal day to day living sense. I highly recommend this for a quick read and also for possible book club readings. I paired this book with my favorite breakfast - overnight oats with mango chunks. 😊🤗👍🏻

"Words, after all, are nothing by themselves. They burst into meaning only in the minds they’ve entered" - Ghachar Ghochar, Vivek Shanbag
-
The best part about this author is that he packs such powerful writing in such a tiny book. The writing is simple yet engaging, short yet furiously compelling.
~
A one sit read with a surprising end, it's set in Bangalore, where I live. So my favourite parts were his slow and lazy descriptions of the city- it's streets and coffee shops. And the way he described the small changes that occur as his family grows wealthier.
~
To me this story was about the things that change as a family becomes wealthier, the superficial changes that contrast with the things that remain seemingly constant despite one's wealth.
~
Who would I recommend this to? Someone that enjoys short stories with powerful messages and interesting endings.
