A young Israeli soldier sits in the dark, at a gate leading into the old city of Jerusalem. With three other girls she decided not to join a large group of IDF soldiers singing at the Western Wall. Not because they objected to it, they just didn’t feel like singing. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When I asked about her service in the IDF she told me that she was trained to be respectful to all people, and that she would never want to support the oppression any group of people. She did not recognise the stories in the international media about the IDF harassing, torturing or even murdering Palestinians in the West Bank or Gaza. What bothered her more about serving was the weight of the M16 assault rifle she had to carry with her at all times.
