I’m a pretty active individual and I live with daily pain. Some days are better than others. Because I have the label “yoga teacher” people make a lot of assumptions about my physical capabilities. Whenever I take a class at the studio, I often get asked by the attendant or teacher signing me in why I am taking a level 1 class. The other day I took a class and the instructor, before I had barely stepped foot in the door, asked me if I was ready to get uncomfortable. I knew she meant well. But, what she didn’t know was that I was already uncomfortable. Because yet again, my body was in pain. During class, the teacher came over to me during a particular pose and said, “You can do this because you’re a teacher.” I really couldn’t. Because, I was in pain. I smiled politely and did my best in the pose with her assistance and cues. Labels are a funny thing. They help us put the world in order, to some degree. But, they can actually do so much more damage because assumptions made based on labels are almost always inaccurate and lead to false perceptions. I became a yoga teacher for reasons far beyond the physical practice. As I get older, I want less and less of a physical practice. I like to slow flow, hold my poses, feel myself rooted to the earth, and just breathe. I’ve had to come to terms with the fact that this is who I am as a yoga teacher. I’ll never have fancy/advanced yoga poses perfectly set in an idyllic background for Instagram. I have felt like an imposter so many times saying I am a yoga teacher because in my head, I didn’t fit the image of what I see on the Internet. But slowly but I have let that imposter syndrome feeling go because I am a yoga teacher. My yoga practice and my yoga teaching style works for me. So, if you’re struggling with being labeled, try to let it go. You are more than a label. You are a human being doing your best to live your best life. It's day 3 of the #YASummerChallenge and we are focusing on self care rituals. .

Except I really don't have one. I work a full time job that has a 1+ hour commute each way, I teach 6 or 7 days a week, I'm in the process of launching a website and blog (coming soon!), and am trying to do all of the training and learning I can on the side. I keep telling myself I'm going to get back to meditating and journaling but it hasn't happened yet. In all honesty I've been using Netflix as a self-care ritual and way to decompress, when I have time (luckily I finished season 4 of How To Get Away With Murder last night so I can move on with my life again).

But... recently I've gotten back to my mat, and almost on a regular/daily basis. I'm focusing on flows and poses that feel good and that my body needs, including a lot of slower flows and hip openers. So right now, having my own yoga practice is my self care ritual. And I'm perfectly fine with that.

Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers for my grandmother.  You'll be happy to know I brought her a comb, so her immediate fears of being disheveled have been assuaged.  As to her medical condition, she still has a long way to go, but her positive outlook and faith have her in high spirits.

She reminded me today of her long and healthy life.  She didn't have any medical issues until her mid-80's and that she doesn't have any regrets.  Can you imagine being hooked up to tubes in an ICU with such a calm mind?  No regrets.  No fears.  Just faith in whatever will be.  I'm in awe of this woman.
