Delightful woman ! 🌹

Note : Her son, Hart, said none of her numerous portraits captured her true likeness. She was the lady who made Thomas Gainsborough, an expert portraitist, throw down his paintbrush in frustration and claim the image defeated his talents.  Despite this setback, we can credit Gainsborough for perhaps the most famous depiction of Georgiana.  We also have Gainsborough to thank for creating a painting which became an obsession for many.
With a knowing look and a raised eyebrow she studies the viewer from under her powdered hair and cocked picture hat, a hat named after this very painting due to women rushing to their milliners asking for a hat just like as they saw in the picture. The hat design was one of Georgiana's own, and had a resurgence in the Victorian era where it was known as Gainsborough hat. The painting experienced a resurgence as well in the Victorian era when it vanished. The famous painting we see today is only a portion of the original work that so frustrated Gainsborough in 1783. ⬇️😀 What do you think of this work ? The Duchess •
Haven't seen this one in a while, will definitely need to rewatch - but currently I'm just binging my way through several more obscure period mini-series. If you can recommend any shorter period shows (6ish episodes) that would be great! 💘 #theduchess #keiraknightley #georgianacavendish #ralphfiennes #theduke #perioddrama #periodromance

When I opened Portals of Time last summer, I was going through a brief obsession with Georgiana Cavendish (1757-1806), Duchess of Devonshire. (I’m an historian, so I like to ponder about different time periods and styles regularly.) Georgiana was a popular English socialite and also a fashion trendsetter. ❤️ Next thing you know, she became part of the branding for #portalsoftimevintage. Pictured: Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, as Cynthia from Edmund Spenser’s “Faerie Queene.” Originally painted in color by Maria Cosway in 1782. The black and white version is a mezzotint print made by Valentine Green in 1783. Housed in the British Museum. Hmmmm...I think I’ll watch “The Duchess” again soon. 😊#georgiana #duchessofdevonshire #georgianaduchessofdevonshire #georgianacavendish #theduchess #edmundspenser #faeriequeene #georgianaascynthiafaeriequeene #styleicon #fashionicon #rebel #feministforhertime #georgianengland #georgianhistory #georgianera #georgianart #georgianfashion #18thcentury #eighteenthcentury #mariacosway #valentinegreen #britishmuseum #portalsvintage #portalsoftimevintage @portalsvintage https://portalsoftimevintage.etsy.com

My 2015 painting, "Luck Of The Draw" was accepted at @laslagunagallery_laguna for 2017-Small Works-Big Talent show in December. LUCKY ME!!! Dec.7 to Dec.29 #laslagunagallery #lagunabeach #luckofthedraw #georgianacavendish #duchessofdevonshire #acrylicpainting #lagunabeachartwalk

I've always been a history fan, especially of the baroque/rococo period, so I drew myself in that style 😊✨ I wanna dress like an 18th century royal 😭 // #art #artstagram #selfportrait #artoftheday #charcoaldrawing #charcoal #rococo #marieantoinette #theduchess #georgianacavendish #reign #maryqueenofscots #theyoungvictoria #periodpiece #periodfilm #prideandprejudice #18thcentury #youngblackartists #freelanceartist

Lady Georgiana Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire, in 1783.
Being one of the most famous and rumored persons of her time, she was the subject of many portraits by the most prominent painters of the century, including Thomas Gainsborough and Joshua Reynolds.
Thomas Gainsborough is known not only as a portrait painter, but also as the originator of British landscape school of 18c.

This work belongs to the period when the artist would make portraits combined with landscapes.
Gainsborough used light palette for his paintings of the time, which created romantic and ethereal impression.
Lady Georgiana Cavendish and her troubled personal life were the inspiration for the movie 'The Duchess', where she was portrayed by Keira Knightley.

The movie, however, is mostly concentrated on her private life and fails to do justice to her contribution to politics, science, literature and other areas of her interest.

At the same time the choice of an actress for the lead is a good example of the change in the perception of beauty.

For the #fallforcostume theme of accessories, here's my giant late-18th century Gainsborough hat from CoCo. This was so fun to make and wear, and I definitely want to make another soon. Hopefully, a blog post will be up about this today or tomorrow.

Day 2: This turquoise 1780s dress is from the movie called "The Duchess" (film) 2008. The dress style is a 'Robe à la Française'. The 3rd; 4th & 5th slides show actress Keira Knightley in the dress. The 6th slide is of the real Georgiana Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire (7 June 1757 – 30 March 1806) in 1775 by Sir Joshua Reynolds and the 7th slide is of her in 1785-1789 by Thomas Gainsborough. #postoftheday #1780s #1770s #robe #georgianacavendish #keiraknightley #theduchess #turquoise #dressoftheday #dress #costume #film #duchessofdevonshire #18thcentury #georgian #day2 #thomasgainsborough #sirjoshuareynolds
