Any geologists in the house know how lines could form like this in sandstone? Appears to be short lines of sandstone within the sandstone... super confused. 🧐
It’s close to the Arroyo Seco river, not at the gorge but at this old swimming hole called peace rock ✌🏼✌🏼✌🏼

We asked our staff what their favorite geology photo was.. Esther Stewart says.. "I took the attached photo at the end of a day of field work to create a geologic map of the North Freedom Quadrangle, Sauk County. This 3.5 Mile Long, 400 foot high Rock Face, is #DryFalls #washingtonstate . It was once the largest waterfall to exist, 65mph waters flooded over this rock face, it is believed it was 5x the width of #niagarafalls with 10x the power of all the rivers in the world combined.
J. Harlen Bretz is the man to thank for the story of this place ID SAY 👏
.
They wouldnt believe him. He called them "Channeled Scablands" He believed cataclysmic flooding in the distant past caused massive erosion in the basalt making these #ChanneledScablands, in #EasternWA
As the Ice Age was researched further, they FINALLY AGREED!

Afterwhile, Bretz and JT Pardee paired up, because Pardee had evidence of the ancient #LakeMissoula that had a ice dam which broke periodically flooding in the right direction. Bretz and Pardee collected research for 30 years that showed Lake Missoula was the source of the "Spokane Floods" thus, creating the "Channeled Scablands"
.
Thank you for your dedication!
He wrote in 1928, "Ideas without precedent are generally looked upon with disfavour and men are shocked if their conceptions of an orderly world are challenged." #jharlenbretz

You get to be out in the field- Although some Geologists work as teachers and laboratory scientists, there is still a fair amount of time spent out in the field, conducting research. This can be an incentive if you enjoy working outdoors.

⭐Hey Rockstars! Today we’re looking at an interesting gemstone known as ammolite. Ammolite is the name given to an opal-like gemstone that has been found mostly along the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains in North America, and is made from the fossilized shells of ammonites! 😍 Whew, those two names are a little confusing. In short, ammoLite is a gemstone made from the fossils of ammoNites!
Ammolite is what’s known as an ORGANIC gemstone, along with other famous examples such as amber and pearl. It is composed of aragonite (from the ammonite shell) and mixtures of calcite, silica, pyrite, and a variety of trace elements. Its’ iridescence is most often in shades of green and red, and is caused by interference of light by stacked layers of thin platelets that make up the aragonite of the shell, and is just a thin sheet around 0.5-0.8 millimeters thick on the surface of the specimen. Thicker layers of platelets make stronger greens and reds, while thinner ones produce more blues and violets.🤩 SO, why are these particular ammonites creating ammolite? 🤔 The structure of the aragonite shells is specific to two species of extinct ammonites, Placenticeras meeki and Placenticeras intercalare. These two species construct their shells with the stacked aragonite platelets that can produce this opal-like sheen.💕 ---------------------------- Sources:
