How to Create a #Villain: Add Madness. Ep.1 of Generic Girl, "Exposition!" introduces the diabolical Doctor and his socialist-rhetoric-spouting henchman Hank.
When my writing partners and I cooked up our cast of characters, we followed an old movie maxim: one shark is better than two barracudas. We wanted a single furious villain who'd also become infuriated and unleash his fury when the time was right. Our villain had to be the hero in his own mind, a man on a mad mission to spread evil ... with a smile. So evolved Doctor Mascalzone (Italian for "rascal," not a cheesy pasta). Actor Richard Hawkins went full-German/Prussian in a performance that harkened back to the indignant Nazi officers in the old TV series "Hogan's Heroes." Richard plays infuriated to the hilt. We reminded ourselves that you get no points for subtlety so director Steven Wasserman urged Richard on: more outrage, more madness.
But what's a villain without his minions of questionable competence? We figured the Doctor's henchmen would be the polar opposites of their scheming superior. In our show bible, I wrote the henchmen are far more concerned with lunch breaks, benefits, and their union than any actual villainous tasks. They're labor guys. So we cast stand-up comic Johnny Skourtis (soon to appear in "The Equalizer"), who Steven had worked with on prior shoots, as Hank the Henchman. Johnny was on-point as a semi-oblivious working stiff who mostly looked forward to the next coffee break. For doughnuts.
In a later episode, we introduce Tank, played by MoMarcellus Robbins, of the same Henchman's Local 666. Crown Prince Stacey is also a villain in his own right, but definitely a thorn in the Doctor's side and foil for the heroes. The Doctor had to remain the top shark to the end when things get, eh, trigger-happy.
