As promised yesterday, here's evidence of Canyon creativity. With a couple of layover days on my recent backpacking trip, I had time to explore the Boucher Creek area of the Grand Canyon. The watershed that drains to Boucher Creek is a pretty good-sized one, and becomes quite a bit larger at its confluence with Topaz prior to its outfall at the Colorado River. This results in a vast assortment of boulders, rocks, stones, and pebbles washing down off the Canyon walls, leaving a veritable smorgasbord of colors, shapes, and textures in the wash bottom. When hiking along the watercourse, my eye continually scans for unique pieces to share, and before long, I have a pocket full of rocks with which to create. From the Canyon walls come limestones, sandstones, shales, shists, jasper, and intrusive granites, all in various states of breakdown. This flatlay was composed with the accumulation of an hour or so of rock hounding. It was left behind in its composed state, and I would anticipate it still remains for other hikers to encounter. An original flatlay by The Dan Cherry in the Boucher Creek watershed of the Grand Canyon. Let me know if you need directions on where to find it. 😎👍 #grandcanyon #grandcanyonnationalpark #gcnp #backpacking #backpack #grandcanyonnps #bouchertrail #hermittrail #tontotrail #campsite #hiking #canyoncountry #nps #nationalpark #nationalparks #arizona #adventure #flatlay #knolling #tv_neatly #flatlaythenation #flatlayforever #flatlaystyle #flatlaynation #flatlaytoday #flatlayoftheday #flatlayinspiration #flatlaysquad #flatlaycollective #flatlayapp

🌄💭👨🏻‍💻A Repugnant Routine👨🏻‍💻💭🌄

Sometimes I feel like a try-hard posting pictures that I took 3 months ago. But then I remember how fulfilled I felt and hope to feel at least a sliver of that again.

It's not easy switching from weeks of wading down rivers and scrambling through new countries to 40 hours of work and two days off a week. From buying two dollar street meals or cooking on a Coleman to budgeting paycheck to paycheck to live for a month. From finding views on a mountainside to finding time to take a deep breath. I suppose this is why I long for the outdoors and daydream of travel.

It has been way too long since I made myself get outside. Not outside like runs through the neighborhood or beers on a patio. Outside like wind-chapped lips, still cool silence, sand in my crack, and sun on my shoulders. I want that. I crave that. I need that to thrive.

Heading back to Colorado after an indescribable week on the Arizona Trail hiking from Utah through the Kaibab Plateau and Grand Canyon to Tusayan. A Hopi native who gave Bones and I our longest hitch back to the car explained to us that we left our bad thoughts and energies at the bottom of the canyon and emerged as new people on the other side. I certainly feel like a whole different Pokey than the one that started this trip a week ago, although I’m still at a loss to explain what happened exactly. It has certainly given me a lot to think about in the near future. Feeling a tremendous amount of love for this beautiful land and its inhabitants.

Under red cliffs and hard sun

18 days-1,575 miles driven-266 miles rafted.
Countless laughs, 203 scorpion sightings, one wasp sting (between a stubbed toe-and a broken one), special celebrations, and an even more special coating of 'canyon sand' on everything we hold near and dear.
Here's to waterfall showers, reading poetry off beer cans and the special funk that is rafting gear. #6tribesoftubenation

Still can't believe I ran a 50K on Saturday. I'm actually not even that sore, which is shocking considering how poorly I trained and how tough the course was! Also, no, I'm not wearing a white shirt. My stomach just never sees the sun 🙈 #gcphotocontest #grandcanyonnp #gcnp #taur #ultrarunning

not pictured: me falling in love with this view 🌈 #NorthRim #GCNP

Q: What does the Grand Canyon and my to-do list have in common?
A: They both have no end in sight

What's in my hiking bag? Yarn and a crochet hook, of course! What better way to relax between long hikes than by crocheting?! ➰🏜

Much of my past week was spent off adventuring in Grand Canyon National Park on a 5-night, 6-day backpacking trip across areas accessed by the Hermit and Boucher (pronounced 'boo-shay', as namesake Louis was Québécois) trails off the south rim. In addition to the long overdue (true) and oft-requested (not) #vacationdanselfie (part of a series!) as the front panel, I have included some additional shots of the gorgeous scenery taken in during my holiday. As there are zero cellular communication towers located within the Canyon walls and the only viable means of communication are smoke signals, mirrors, and satellite uplinks, I have missed a week of Instagram posting and have fallen far behind in keeping up with my feed. My most sincere apologies on that, and while I was able to catch up on the staggering #IMOMAS posts of late last week (thank you all so much for thinking of me ☺️), I am trying to get my life back to sorted, while also reintegrating to work. The swipe-left panels include several of my favorite views from the trail, including sheer walls, remarkable natural colors, perfect October weather, and the mighty Colorado River. Hope you're able to vicariously enjoy my getaway for a short bit, and please let me know if I need to provide any further detail. I was able to take a moment and indulge my flatlay cravings last Friday, and will try to share the results of that endeavor in the near future. Thanks again to everyone for your patience with my lack of activity here.
