Warm winters might be the only trait of its species that Mumbai displays. Unlike its cousins, this coastal city does not know how to be laid-back. Its beaches don't have the soil for sunbathers. Instead, they grow busy people selling everything from chaat and ice pops to pinwheels and horse rides. Its sea facing promenades are less for the pensive and more for the couples. And that's why it becomes important to go to Gateway of India, board a ferry and get arrested by the sea for those short thirty minutes.
Usually for the price of one ticket, you get a view of the skyline from the deck and an old Bombay vibe when you see the heritage buildings on one side and gigantic ships on the other. I was lucky enough to get cold December winds, something of a cosy, white fog smearing the skies and a natural hum on my lips.
I also met seagulls who had migrated to my warm city for the winter, while my bird of a heart dreamed of spreading wings and flying off to where the snow must be falling now. Soon, the orange glow of the sunset settled upon the skyline and made the city I love visible again. My longing for distant lands trailed off, as did my humming; because my city had cast a spell on me for the millionth time in my life.
I might have affairs to remember with laid-back coastal cities and I might have poetic love stories with lands of snow. My heart, however, will never tire of Bombay, with her face as hard as her children's spirit and her beauty as classic as their abuses. No, Bombay will always be the nest that hatched my fortitude and strengthened my wings.
