"Morgan experimented with ways to eradicate a common problem among sewing machines: the needle of the machine would cause friction that would then burn the fabric. He set out to create a solution that would prevent burning. His solution, however, made the fibers straight. After testing the solution on a dog and then himself, he began selling his hair refiner.”

Garrett Morgan 1877-1963 Mixed race Inventor

With only an elementary level school education, Morgan moved to Cincinnati Ohio in his mid teens for work, and while working in several sewing machine factories he became facinated with the innerworkings of the machines , and obtained a patent for an improved sewing machine, opening his own repair business. Riding on the financial success of the patent, he began experimenting on ways to prevent woolen fabric from getting scorched by the sewing machine due to friction, and the solution he concocted led to his discovery of a hair straightening ointment. He established the G.A. Morgan Hair Refining Company and sold the cream to African Americans. With the financial security he patented a "safety hood" or breathing device, marketing it to fire departments, the device becoming the prototype for WWI gas masks, earning him first prize in the Second International Exposition of Safety and Sanitation in New York City. Due to resistance from the South towards the device due to Morgan being black, he hired a white actor to present the device while he would pose as the assistant using the product in a fire, and sales went up immediately. He and his brother were able to demonstrate the full capacity of the devices when they rescued workers trapped by the Cleveland Tunnel Explosion, but it exposed him as being black and tanked sales, some reports even omitting that he had any part in the rescue. Not to be discouraged her obtained a patent for a traffic signal, the rudimentary cousin to the modern three way traffic light, and sold the rights to General Electric for $40,000. He was also a part of the NAACP, opened an all black country club, and donated to black colleges. Just before his death he was honored by the US government for his traffic light invention, and his name was restored as the hero of the Laker Erie rescue. #garettmorgan #blackhistory #inventor #americanhero #trafficlight #hairproducts #cleveland #patents #naacp #civilrights #ushistory

Comments like this are why I can't care about "#blackhistorymonth" it's a time for white people to feel good about themselves and pat themselves on the back for their generosity to acceptable black people and their accomplishments... 1: Lincoln didn't free the slaves he freed the slaves of the succeeded south which he technically didn't control and he did it not because he liked black People but because he wanted to destabilize the economy of the south so they wouldn't have the money or resources to win the civil war... 2: as black history month begins I remember that in 1926 as #CaterGWoodson launched #Negrohistoryweek <<< WEEK because there wasn't a platform that existed to educate black youth on their history and wasn't expanded until 1976 3: my history is not a month or an elective course only offered at the collegiate level in most states and it should be mandatory for everyone to learn because we currently have a White House administration who believes #FrederickDouglass is still alive 4: black history starts with the birth of man on what was know as the dark continent and features the creation of civilization, democracy, agriculture, and technology not just #MartinLutherkingjr (who was an adulator and smoked cigarettes it's important that we acknowledge that even in his good works he was flawed), #rosaparks, and #GarettMorgan. .... history is written by the winners and y'all not about to tell me how to celebrate myself #mikepence
