This mound is located across the Niranjan river flowing along Bodhgaya is to commemorate the "Kheer Episode" in the life of Gautam Buddha. .
It is said in Buddhist literature that after years of severe penance and self-negation, Siddhartha Gautam (Not Buddha that time) was completely worn out. His prolonged austerites proved utterly futile. The more he tormented himself, the farther his goal recede from him. After that he conceived the idea of middle path, which later became cornerstone of their teachings, he bathed in Niranjan river and accepted a bowl of Rice-milk (Kheer) from the hands of Sujata, a young woman who lived in the neighbouring villages and thought that he was a tree deity. .
Another story is also there about this place mentioned in Xuan Zang travelogues, is that this Stupa representing the same site where the Buddha lived in his past life as the "perfumed elephant" (Gandahasti). The perfumed elephant's mother was blind, so every day he bathed and fed his mother with filial care. One day the king saw the magnificent creature and captured him. The king offered him the finest food, but elephant refused to eat. When the king asked the elephant why he wasn't eating, he replied "when my mother is blind and has not eaten for days, how can I eat when she suffers ?" The king felt pity for elephant and set him free.
