#TBT March 2015. We’re smiling on the outside but inside both terrified.
I had just gotten released from ICU for 5 days after complications from my thyroidectomy. I was being pumped with fluids because I wasn’t able to eat OR drink a single thing that week since my vocal cords were paralyzed, causing me to choke on everything. I couldn’t breathe right. Talks about sending me home with a feeding tube. Not knowing whether or not it was going to be permanent.
What still sticks in my head was my daughter running to see me (it was the longest we’d been away from each other), and stopping dead in her tracks when she saw me hooked up to the IVs. The fear on her face killed me. From that moment on I swore to myself that I would do everything I could to take care of myself so I never had to see that look on her face again.
I pushed myself to get better. I refused go home with a feeding tube and have her see me like that. I worked with my surgeon and finally figured out the consistency of food I needed to give my throat muscles enough time to work. 3 months later, I was able to eat (and drink ) normally again.
One year later, I ran the Broad Street 10 miler. And another the year after that.
It’s not vain or selfish to take care of yourself...quite the opposite. I do this health & fitness thing so I never have to see that look on her face ever again.
I want to inspire people to join me. You get one body. Take care of it.
