Winged Victory (Nike) of Samothrace, 2nd C BC, Pythokritos // I don’t like to take pictures of artwork, because it feels like I’m trying to capture something that can’t, and shouldn’t, be captured. Like I’m trying to consume it, rather than engage with, and respect it. This was the only picture I took of a work of art in the Louvre. It does it absolutely no justice, & this post is more about how thankful and in awe I am that I had the chance to be this close to her. The power of this piece has done me in every since I learned about it as a baby undergraduate in art history class 8 years ago. I’ve been waiting to see it ever since, and seeing her in person was Everything.
