When does a woman's body become public property?
When she shows it off? People are entitled to wolf whistle, cat call and generally make comments. Or worse, touch her without her consent because she choses to show off her body. Why?
Or what about if she changes it? Gets a tattoo or piercing or changes her weight. People are allowed to comment upon that (adding liberal amounts of their opinion as to whether they like the change or not, perhaps she's gained 'too much' or lost 'too much'). Why?
When she's pregnant. You can touch her swollen belly and comment upon whether you feel the bump is an appropriate size for how far along she is. Also make sure to mention whether or not she is glowing and if she looks tired, before adding some pointless and ridiculous comment such as 'make sure you get some sleep in now!' Why?
After she's had a baby. Everyone must comment upon whether she looks good having given birth. It doesn't matter that she's wracked with anxiety and emotion and physically she's been stapled/sewn back together, please, my body is yours to comment upon, you must do so.
When she ages. Once a lady reaches a certain age a judgement must be made every year as to whether she is ageing well or poorly. 'she's kept her figure' being the ultimate accolade.
A woman's body is public property because we allow it. Mothers, I encourage you to teach your daughters bodily autonomy from the beginning, I will do this so that when my daughter receives such comments she knows they are invalid and she knows how to protect herself from those who would violate it. Daughters, your body is sacred and above all it is yours. Do what YOU want with it and take ownership of it so that others cannot.
