We are ending #MuseumWeek with a focus on Heritage and The Frick Art Reference Library! The #FrickLibrary was founded in 1920 by Helen Clay Frick as a memorial to her father Henry Clay Frick. Responding to Mr. Frick's interest in learning more about the artists whose works he had purchased, Helen began to conduct research on his behalf... which would later become the nucleus of the Library. Helen served as Director from its inception until shortly before her death in 1984. The image above shows Helen (center) with the Library staff in the 1920s. #HeritageMW #WomenMW #frickcollection #frickarchives

The #MuseumWeek theme for today is Stories: In January of 1914, former actress and decorator of the Colony Club, Elsie de Wolfe, solicited Henry Clay Frick for a share in the furnishings of his house. By mid-March, she was hired to furnish four bedrooms, a room on the third floor, nearly all of the family rooms on the second floor, and several rooms on the ground floor. This image depicts one of the spaces she furnished, Adelaide’s Frick’s (Mrs. HCF) Boudoir on the second floor, which is currently the office of our Director, Ian Wardropper. #StoriesMW #WomenMW #tbt #frickcollection

Today we celebrate #MusicMW: This saltcellar and its pair, are marked with the initials SC for Suzanne de Court, the only known female enameler in sixteenth-century Limoges. The decoration is after woodcuts attributed to Bernard Salomon that were first published in Lyon in 1557 to illustrate Ovid’s Metamorphoses. On one saltcellar, the furious women of Cicones attack Orpheus because he has decided to avoid mortal women after the loss of his beloved wife, Eurydice. But their spears are stopped by the magic of his music and fall harmlessly at his feet. The story continues on the second saltcellar, with Orpheus slain and his head thrown into the River Hebrus while three women mourn his death. In the final scene, Apollo turns the dragon that sought to devour Orpheus’s head into stone. Saltcellars like these were likely not intended to hold salt but were instead displayed on tables and sideboards during banquets. #WomenMW #MuseumWeek #frickcollection #Limoges --
