If you haven’t seen this show yet, Saturday is the closing reception, go check it out then or before that day. “Ply the spinning wheel and you will not require cannons
The spinning wheel of Gandhi will not allow your bombs to explode
The spinning wheel of Gandhi brought us freedom.”

This folk ballad from Punjab conveys the spirit of Nationalism before 1947. How did the humble Charkha, which was once the source of livelihood of artisans become the symbol of Swadeshi movement?

During the colonisation of India, the British realised that growing cotton was a cash crop that could enrich their coffers. The British would have cotton grown in India, harvested by Indians and then shipped to Britain to be spun and woven into cloth. The same cloth was then shipped back to India and sold at unaffordable prices. In fact, Britain had laws that forced the Indians to buy only this cloth. Gandhiji thought why should we buy back our own cotton cloth? Lets spin it ourselves! Thus he made spinning on the Charkha a symbol of the passive resistance movement in India, through this seemingly mild, yet powerful activity.

Gandhiji’s Charkha and all that it embodies still lives on as a symbol of resilience, self-reliance and strength for hundreds of thousands of artisans in India. Several versions of this winding spindle can be found across the villages of our country, assembled by material locally available to the artisans.

Today as we celebrate the 69th year of being the Republic of India, lets not forget the message of the spinning wheel, one of simplicity, service of mankind, living so as not to hurt others, creating an indissoluble bound between the rich and the poor, capital and labour, the prince and the peasant.
