Not many people know about uveitis.
I hadn't heard of it until I was diagnosed in 2015. Uveitis is the third leading cause of blindness worldwide, and can lead to cataracts, glaucoma, and retinal detachment among many others complications.
I have a condition called Fuch's Heterochromic Iridocyclitis, which has caused chronic bilateral anterior uveitis. I get bimonthly injections in my eyes to try to keep it under control and prevent further deterioration of my vision, and I had intraocular lens transplant surgery in February this year.
Eye health is really important, but it's not something we think of very much. Especially in Australia, you should always wear sunglasses - even on overcast days - to protect from UV rays, which are a leading cause of cataracts in otherwise healthy eyes.
If you wear contact lenses, make sure you keep them as clean and sterile as possible, and don't wear disposable lenses for longer than recommended. And for the love of God, don't wear cheap costume contact lenses!!
Also, if you've got any extra cash burning a hole in your pocket, consider giving it to the Fred Hollows Foundation who do amazing work caring for the eyes and preventing blindness for indigenous Australians and people in developing nations.
