#FrankieFact for today: bay and black horses! The gene for these colors is called Agouti. A horse has to be non-chestnut (Ee or EE) to show these colors. A dominant allele will show bay (Aa or AA), while black is homozygous recessive (aa). There is always debate over whether a dark bay horse is really black, or vice versa. Unfortunately, genetics are the only way to know for sure, as there is no genetic difference between a standard bay and a seal bay horse (at least, not any genes we can currently test for). I will have Frankie genetically tested before standing him at stud.

#FrankieFact for today: Did you know chestnut horses are recessive? A red horse (also called sorrel or chestnut) is the most common color found in horses. All three names refer to the same genetic color, but some registries differentiate between shades with different names. It has two recessive alleles at the extension gene, making it a homozygous recessive trait (ee). Breeding two chestnut horses will always create a chestnut foal. If a horse has one copy of the dominant allele (non-chestnut, Ee or EE) the horse will express whatever alleles are at the agouti gene (black or bay). When writing out genetics, it goes by order of expression. Since grey-carrying horses are always grey, that gene is listed first, followed by chestnut. So a grey horse could carry the chestnut alleles, but not express them(Gg ee). Questions? Link is in bio!

#FrankieFact for today: Colors and genetics. It always surprises me how many horse people don’t know the reasons behind color! To make things easy, I’ll start with grey horses. Grey is a dominant color, meaning if one dominant allele is passed on from a parent, the foal will show grey. Grey is also a color that will ‘cover up’ any other colors the horse carries (chestnut, bay, etc.) If a horse carries this allele, it will always be grey. Most greys are heterozygous (Gg), which means they carry one copy of the grey gene and one copy of the non-grey gene. So there is a 1/4 chance the foal will be grey if a grey is bred to a non-grey (Gg x gg). If two greys are bred, 1/2 chance the foal will be grey (Gg x Gg). By looking at pedigree, it is easy to figure out if a horse is homozygous dominant (two dominant grey alleles) or heterozygous. A horse MUST have two grey parents to even have the chance to be homozygous dominant (GG), and every foal that horse has will show grey. If you have any questions, link is in my bio!
