3/3: After the Saatchi show in 92, the curator called and told me that Francis Bacon had been into the gallery and spent an hour in front of my sculpture, I thought they were being kind and exaggerating but I kind of felt good about it although I wasn’t sure if he’d actually liked it.
Then years later this letter came to light (pics 3/4) where Bacon had written to his friend Louis le Brocquy, and in the letter he’s talking about my work and says ‘it really works’. that blew me away as I’d never spoken to him even though I’d been in the Colony Room in London a few times when he was there. I was in awe I guess I just froze up and could never speak to him. I was young tho and he could be vicious. He was just so important to me. Also to talk to him felt kind of felt uncool like, what could I say? I’d devoured all his David Sylvester interviews when I was in Leeds. That and talking to Marcus Harvey was what got me into art and made me realise I could be an artist.
2nd pic is a newspaper Bacon saved.
