We couldn’t let National Volunteer Week go by without recognizing one of our hardest working volunteers, Jason Silzer. We sat down with him to discuss what volunteering means to him.
Who do you currently volunteer with and what is your role?
I volunteer with Theatre Scarborough and its member groups. I administer their box office system, and oversee the coordination of corporate sponsorships and personal donations. Additionally, I sometimes perform with, and direct for, some of the member groups.
What do you get out of volunteering?
Theatre is a passion for me, and volunteering with this (and other) theatre groups lets me follow that passion very much on my own terms. Like all work, volunteering with theatre groups is by turns fun and frustrating, but is always rewarding. In addition, it has been professionally educational. For example, I gained a lot of leadership experience from my work on the boards of directors of bother Scarborough Music Theatre and Theatre Scarborough. I have also had the opportunity to take courses and workshops that, though theatre-centered, have had a lot of transferable skills.
What is something you’d like people to know more about?
I’d like people to know how easy it is to volunteer. All you have to do is know what you are interested in, and what time commitment you can provide. If you’re not sure, it is easy to test the waters and get exposure to lots of different aspects.
I’d also like people to know that skills they might not think of as theatre-related are still needed by community theatre. For example, people with skills in project planning, book keeping, marketing, or grant writing are all absolutely required to keep a theatre group running.
