When I'm not in the gym, I'm helping seniors add years to their life through exercise. It's been the most rewarding experience of my life and I thank God for trusting me with the lives of our elders. Put up a little fox rehab page on The Canid Project site, to document our efforts. First blog is up! It'll feature blog updates, videos, and photo galleries. I have so much content, I am making a point to add to it as often as possible! :) LINK IN BIO // www.thecanidproject.com/fox-rescue/

Neat little clip of all the foxes in one frame for just a few seconds hovering around their cricket pool yesterday. They have outgrown it and can't properly pounce in it anymore! So a baby swimming pool is in order. Note how much they've grown and in what great condition their coats and tails are. Oh, and also note how skittish they are; they hear me coming to get the video and disperse and hide quickly. They've actually become even more cautious of me the older they get. .

Best Friends // These two are actually not biological siblings. The female (top) came in with her two siblings, having been trapped by a trapper who was hired by a citizen to have them removed, thus they were separated from their mother and one other sibling who got away. But the young boy (bottom), as he's a few weeks younger than the rest, came in on his own at about 7 to 8 weeks old. He'd been clipped by a car and was wobbling down the road by himself. These two, being the most playful of the bunch, were fast friends upon introduction. They play together, rest together, and even groom each other a bit. I hope they can keep each other company for at least a little while upon their release. It's always better to have a partner in crime. :) .

Some tiny macro clips from Monday. After I gave the enclosure a full clean out, I shot some footage with my long lens - catching some moments before the foxes dozed off for the day. . .
A huge thanks to Carol Stockton Saling for donating more venison and keeping us well stocked (you are an angel), Teri Lynn for donating some more game meat, Dave McFarland for also providing yet some more game meat, Julie Amador for donating some chicks and mice, and an anonymous donation of $150 that went straight to 12 packs of chicks and mice (300 total). Also, big big thanks to David L. Jeffries and his wife Delores for donating some bricks to help pave the way through the mud to the enclosure. Love to you all. .

Also, thanks a million to Emily Harris and Alisa Polk of Animal Protection and Welfare Society - APAWS for helping me administer the foxes' first round of vaccinations and another round of flea/heartworm prevention. It is definitely a three person job and I couldn't have done it without you all. <3 :)

The Canid Project orphaned Red Foxes about 2 months ago when they were just wee ones. This was the day they were put in their their first outside rehab enclosure.

Today the foxes were introduced to a roadkill Gray Squirrel. They've had window strike birds, but were not quite this excited as the youngest boy is here. He was the third to gain control. This is exactly the kind of behavior you see when a vixen presents dead prey to the kits at the den. They throw it about, chase each other and fight over it. Very valuable lessons learned.

WHAT DO THE CANID PROJECT REHAB FOXES EAT? Well, I mix it up daily. No matter what though they always get dead mice, chicks, eggs (just weekly), raw venison, fruits like berries, bananas, and apples, veggies like peas, sweet potatoes, carrots. Also I do include a high end dog kibble that includes Taurine, an amino acid found in meat and fish, which foxes must have in their diets just like cats. Flip through to see what I prepared for them for their second meal today. The powder you see is their supplements. I also included duck wings and corn on the cob for enrichment. *i alternate with finely chopping up their fruit and veggies in a blender to giving it to them whole or in large chucks for variety in texture. 🦊🦌🍎🥕🌽

Round and round he goes. This is the youngest male of our troupe of 5 orphaned Red Foxes in our care for about another month, at which point they will be released back onto the wild. Daily I provide enrichment for the fox kits, and it's quite fun to come up with ideas. Over the past month I've been taking walks in the woods to gather branches and leaves of native fruit- and nut-bearing trees, shrubs, and vines and putting them in their enclosure. They eat them all and love to gnaw on the branches. The idea is to get them used to the things they will encounter and eat in the wild. The Beautyberry and Elberberry berrries will be ripe and ready to pick soon! I know they'll love them. Today I placed a lot of these items, along with some corn husks, in a bucket as something new to present to them, something for them to investigate and figure out. This little guy is the bravest of the bunch and started to investigate it nearly immediately.

REPOST: Lovely shot by our super talented friend: photographer, conservationist, and biologist Lucas Bustamante @luksth of Ecuador. Lucas says of this photo, "This is the elusive Andean Fox (Lycalopex culpaeus) that inhabits the Andes and the surroundings of Quito, my native city". // I love these foxes because to me, they look like a mix of a Red Fox, Gray Fox, and a Coyote! :)
