Last month I skipped our monthly rendezvous with #booksonroute and I do apologise for that, but I had good reasons. Now I’m back with “Love Holidays”, a travel diary Dacia Maraini’s parents used to keep. Dacia Maraini is an amazing Italian writer and a few years ago she decided to collect pages, letters, postcards and pictures her parents took while they were travelling. What makes this diary special among the others is that they travelled in a time when very few people could do it: Fosco Maraini, Dacia’s dad, was an anthropologist, while Topazia, Dacia’s mum, was a painter. They visited so many places in 1934/35 - scandalously, they were all by themselves and not married (yet). If this isn’t a love story... They lived an adventurous life, they were in Japan during WW2 and they spent years in a prison camp. They had three daughters, who became artists and writers. They divorced at the end of the 60s but their love for each other inspired this huge masterpiece. They were open minded and full of curiosity in a time of war and intolerance.
