Never realised the broad beans look so pretty double-podded and spilt!! You know, I had never seen fresh broad beans till I got to UK! .
Deep fried broad beans (just like the ‘habas fritas’ that we know here) are a very popular snack in Taiwan, but we’d never seen them fresh, only the fried golden yellow ones!! When my ma & pa visited a few years ago, I bought a big bagful to show them and for them to pod— oh their faces were quite a picture!! Like kids seeing something for the first time, their wonderment and excitement were a sheer delight to witness! They chattered the whole time, couldn’t quite believe what they were seeing and doing. (There, get your parents a big bag of beans to pod to keep them entertained is a thing….) Before you ask, OF COURSE they got to taste the fresh beans!! .
It occurred to me that it’s quite the reverse of Brits and butterbeans: we don’t see fresh butterbeans in the UK, only the cream-coloured tinned or dried ones, but the pale green fresh ones are always plentiful in the markets in Taiwan and my mum used to stir fry them! .
Just thought I’d share that with you!
