In late June, 1776, a number of British warships arrived in New York Harbor, anchoring off of the coast of Staten Island. An American battery, located where #FortHamilton is now, fired upon the British ships, and the gunship Asia returned fire. General William Howe considered launching an immediate attack on #LongIsland, but the scouting party that he sent ahead got into a skirmish with a group of Patriots defending the Heights of Guan. He decided to head to Staten Island, where there was a sizeable population of Loyalists. He waited for his brother, Admiral Richard Howe, to arrive with more ships (over 40 in total), and in the beginning of July the first of 10,000 British and Hessian troops began landing on Staten Island. A small group of Americans fired upon them, but quickly retreated, as there were too many soldiers coming ashore. There were other bands of militia across the island, but as soon as they learned of the British landing, they defected and joined them. On July 12th, three days after the statue of King George had been toppled at #BowlingGreen, two warships, the gunship Phoenix and the frigate Rose, sailed up the #HudsonRiver to assess the capacity of the American batteries. They started firing when they were near Paulus Hook (#JerseyCity), and fire was returned, but it failed to badly damage the ships. The Americans suffered a handful of casualties (including a mishandled cannon that blew up, killing several), but the bombardment sent New Yorkers into a panic, and many of them immediately left the city; an estimated 80% of residents fled in July and August 1776. Meanwhile, more ships were arriving off of the coast of Staten Island. Soon there were over 32,000 British and Hessian soldiers, plus 13,000 sailors. Onlookers reported that the ships had the appearance of a floating forest. This was the largest British expeditionary force ever assembled, and after six weeks of preparations, they would cross the Narrows and invade Long Island, leading to the Battle of #Brooklyn (more to come on that soon!) #NYC #StatenIsland #AmericanRevolution #military #war #maritime #history #NYChistory #DiscoveringNYC
