YES, THE BENCH PRESS IS IMPORTANT IN FOOTBALL
Running back, weights 183 💪🏻 There has been a lot of talk over the last few years about the actual benefit of the bench press for football players. Put me the category of the bench press being a beneficial training strategy. Many coaches call it overrated but mostly they are being controversial to be controversial.
Despite what is commonly thought, the bench press is a full-body strength exercise that builds strength and stability through a horizontal pressing motion. It is a compound lift that helps target the whole nervous system when being performed properly.
My players bench once a week in our 6 week summer program. 5 Sets x 3 Reps per set with a max effort 1 rep max at the end. * As a coach you are doing a disservice to football players if you don’t prioritize this movement because this is something that the sport utilizes as a metric to determine a players value. * One thing I do not have my players do is push heavy weight overhead. No split jerks, overhead squats or snatches. Football puts so much pressure on the shoulder as a sport that these lifts in my opinion cause more harm than good.
How do you feel about the bench press?
If you train football players do you do much overhead? Why or Why not? • •
