"It's very common for babies to refuse food when solids are introduced. And it's important to respect their decision to refuse it. Never force your kid to eat".

Kid's fussy eating can be hard to change but there is a step that a lot of parents forget in the process. This step is looking at the parent's and how they feel about their child's eating.
If you stress when your child refuses to eat a meal or use food to comfort your child then this post is a must read. Trying to fix your child's fussy eating without looking at the whole family is never going to work. Fussy eating is rarely just about the child.

Healthy conversations (through crafting) about food during neophobia ('fussy eating') Corn on the cob. We love painting and sticking so making these little characters at playgroup today was very popular!

Including healthy food and lifestyle messages into play and crafting is a great way to talk about food etc in a positive way. This can be particularly useful during the toddler years where a natural (normal instinctive) phase called neophobia can kick in. During this time you can expect children to narrow their taste preferences and to be more cautious with new foods. Continuous exposure to a healthy balanced and varied diet during this time can help them to widen their preferences again more quickly. Using the love it, like it, learning it principle can really help.
To make these little beauties cut an oval shaped piece of paper. Use a small piece of a straw (1-1&1/2inches) and dip the end into brown paint (we say 'dip dip' when we do this!) and stamp it over the paper. Next you need some yellow paint and a round sponge paint brush (or similar) to make the round kernels. Add some green crepe paper leaves (two 'leaf shape' pieces) to the sides with a couple of daps of PVA glue. Finish it off with some eyes πŸ‘€ & wool for the hair (could use shredded paper). #cornonthecob #sweetcorn #crafting #kidscraft #playgroup #toddler #toddlerlife #twins #foodrefusal #fussyeater #registereddietitian #paediatricdietitian #nutritionexpert #nutrition #nutritionist #loveitlikeitlearningit #doubleyummy

We had the last of the leftovers tonight though I cooked up a quick stir fry veggies to go with it. My youngest is back on a hunger strike. After weeks of eating big portions and lots of veggies, he's back to a few bites at dinner and telling us he doesn't like it. It is likely this change in eating is because he is not in a growth spurt. I am completely ignoring that he is hardly eating though I'll be happy when his appetite returns πŸ˜† Don't you just love toddlers πŸ˜‚ #healthyhabits #toddlerappetite #kidsfood

LIVER PATE | Noah took interest in my liver pate and even had a tiny taste. He then surprised me again when he asked for more! My excitement was a little bit premature though. I defrosted another cube, envisaging him eating more but all he did was mush it around the plate and feed me mouthfuls instead. Oh well, it's still been ages since he took interest in food and was brave enough to try something new. I'll take that as a win πŸ˜„πŸ˜„πŸ˜„ #whatsnoaheating #foodaversions #foodphobia #foodrefusal #fussyeaters #allergies #foodallergies #allergykids #allergykid #allergymum #allergymom #leakygut #guthealth #guthealing #healing #healingwithfood #foodismedicine #gapsdiet #gaps #gapsintro #gapskids #gapslife #gutandpsychologysyndrome #playwithfood #liverpate #healingfood

NOAH | over the last month we've had some challenging days feeding Noah. Some days it would take half an hour to get him to eat 200ml. He wanted to sing and dance and jump between mouthfuls. Or he would just outright refuse. Distraction has always helped, hence why he knows how to sing so many nursery rhymes (thank you iPad haha). @kenlammelb had no chance getting him to eat, and I had to resort to sitting him in my lap on the couch and craning my neck around to see where I was putting the spoon. I'm going to need a lifetime of massage to get the cranks out of my neck sitting in that position for upwards of 2+hrs a day. And then something changed over this last week. He let me put him in his high chair to sit at the table. Something he used to absolutely refuse! He started opening his mouth wider and if I paused for whatever reason he started looking for where the spoon had gone. Feeding time reduced significantly, and now it takes less than 10 minutes to feed him. And then today something amazing happened! Just half an hour after I finished feeding him he came running to me and said "Noah is feeling hungry", "Noah wants some soup". It's the first time he's ever told me he's hungry! I had read GAPS stories where children start eating like crazy as their body starts craving nourishing food and that never quite happened for us. Maybe it's starting now! Regardless I'm just so happy. I had a little jig in my step as I heated up his soup and fed him another bowl 😁😁😁 #whatsnoaheating #allergies #foodallergies #allergykids #allergykid #allergymom #allergymum #leakygut #guthealth #guthealing #healing #healingwithfood #foodismedicine #gaps #gapsdiet #gapsintro #gapslife #gapskids #gutandpsychologysyndrome #foodrefusal #foodaversions #hungrytoddler

Focus, Focus!

Once in a while it's good for us to practice focus and impulse-control with our guide dogs. Many puppy raisers will have their puppies in training practice similar tasks as they become more skilled with food refusal, self-control, focus, and relationship development.
During a break at our part-time job the other day, I had Figaro practice these very things. He didn't even think about grabbing the kibble! And when I gave him the "Ok!" release to allow him to take it--he still ignored it and waited until I presented him each piece of kibble as a reward.
Way to go, Figaro! You are a quintessential example of a well-trained, disciplined, focused guide dog, and I love you like crazy!! -Nicole

In this weeks blog post I talked about constant exposure being one of the keys to getting your kids to try new foods. Brussels spouts are one of those foods that we don't eat very often so my boys have not really seen them before. I served them up tonight, roasted in garlic and balsamic vinegar and they tasted great. My boys were not so excited about them and didn't want to try them. I had shown them to the boys while I was cooking them but they still didn't want to try it. I didn't force them to try the Brussel sprouts or even ask them to take a bite and was completely ok with them saying no. Over time I'll keep serving them and who knows, one day they may learn to love them πŸ˜†
